Cocktail
Whether you prefer fruity cocktails or proper pints, this weekend relax in some of the best bars in the North East and Yorkshire

1. Wylam Brewery
Fresh Wylam beer on keg and cask – what more could you want? Head here on a Sunday and tie in your visit with a cracking roast dinner, with Yorkshire puddings the size of your head.
Exhibition Park, Newcastle NE2 4PZ
0191 650 0651 www.wylambrewery.co.uk

2. The Botanist
Probably the most Instagrammed ceiling in Newcastle, The Botanist serves cocktails done properly and a great background on which to photograph them. Head to the terrace overlooking Grey’s Monument and bring in the end of Dry January with a drink and a view.
Monument Mall, Newcastle NE1 5AU
0191 261 6307 www.thebotanist.uk.com

3. St. Mary’s Inn
Cosy up by the fire with a pint of custom-made ale, before ending the night with a glass of whiskey (there’s around 50 to pick from). Don’t leave your four-legged friend at home, here they’ll be able to snack on special dog popcorn and sip dog beer.
St Mary’s Lane, Morpeth NE61 6BL

4. The Nuthatch
A specialist cocktail bar with a very, very specialist gin menu – they’ve got 30 on the go, plus a pick-and-mix selection of garnishes and tonics – and an enjoyably overexcited approach to presentation: the Elixir comes with edible flowers and is served in a metal pineapple.
9–11 Bedford Street, Middlesbrough TS1 2LL

5. The Red Lion
From the raised decking area you’ll see boats bobbing about in the River Aln (or sat on the sand), plus there are weekly new arrivals on the kegs and casks from breweries like Firebrick, Wylam, Cumberland and Roosters.
22 Northumberland Street, Alnmouth NE66 2RJ

6. Sótano
Sótano (Spanish for basement) is unsurprisingly a bar in a basement that serves up tasty Mediterranean tapas. With a selection of nearly 30 gins and 60 beers on offer, you’re spoilt for choice.
1 Little Stonegate, York YO1 8AX

7. The House of Trembling Madness
A shop and bar all rolled into one, this ancient venue retains its original beams and medieval feel, with animal heads adorning the walls that watch you as you sip on draught beers, cider and wine.
48 Stonegate, York YO1 8AS

8. North Brewing Co.
Pick from the five signature beers or guest ales and order in your favourite takeaway to go with it. If beer’s not your thing there’s prosecco on tap, but you’d be mad not to at least try one of the home concoctions.
Unit 6, Taverner’s Walk Estate, Leeds LS7 1AH

9. Bellgrave Music Hall
Enjoy cask ales and frozen cocktails with live music in this arty venue set over three floors. There’s an awesome rooftop terrace you need to check out and a tasty menu which would go down rather well with a pint.
1–1A Cross Belgrave Street, Leeds LS2 8JP
0113 234 6160 www.belgravemusichall.com

10. Craft & Dough
If you like craft beer served up with proper homemade pizza, here’s your weekend pick sorted. Venture out with one of the house creation cocktails; now you’re back on the liquor you can have as many ‘Blackberry Thyme Margheritas’ as you please.
44 Campo Lane, Sheffield S1 2EG
