We think brunch is one of the most important meals of the day – be it creamy eggs Benedict, maple-drizzled pancakes or the simple delicacy of avo on toast. Head out to one of our favourite spots to fill up on the perfect breakfast-and-lunch combo

ARLO BISTRO CAFÉ
36–38 Brentwood Avenue, West Jesmond NE2 3DH
0191 281 4838 www.arlojesmond.com
ARLO is a foodie heaven with Alpine memorabilia on the walls, retro knick-knacks to browse and a totally laid-back vibe to enjoy. What’s more, they serve up the king of eggs Benedicts. Layered up like a little masterpiece with the toasted muffin at the base, spinach, kettle cooked ham, a poached egg and thick, creamy hollandaise on top, with a sprinkling of mixed seeds – delicious.

NUMBER9 BISTRO
Broadway, Ponteland NE20 9PW
01661 820820 www.number9bistro.co.uk
This new local bistro opened last year in Darras Hall and has a hearty (and really good) brunch menu. We like the sound of the posh beans on toast with sourdough bread, baked beans, two poached eggs and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese on top.

UPPER WEST STREET
7 West Street, Berwick TD15 1AS
01289 331711 www.upperwestst.co.uk
We’re pretty big fans of anywhere that serves brunch all day long, and the Upper West Street in Berwick does exactly that. That means a sleep in, fluffy French toast or doughy pancakes drizzled in maple syrup, topped with fresh fruit and a sparkling cocktail on the side.

WALLIS AND CO
12A Navigation Point, Hartlepool TS24 0UH
01429 862228 www.facebook.com/wallisandcobarandkitchen
This brunch spot, nestled in Hartlepool Marina, is a lovely place to tuck into your eggs: royal, Benedict, scrambled, poached, you name it. Try a ‘Monkey Anger’ cocktail on the side – Monkey Shoulder Whiskey shaken with banana liqueur, pineapple juice and lime, with a half peeled banana as a garnish – to score one of your five a day.

COLE CAFÉ AND DELI
1 Side Cottage, Roker Terrace, Sunderland SR6 9LX
07834 236851 www.facebook.com/pg/colecafeanddeli
Picture yourself soaking up the January sunshine with the sea breeze in your hair, (ethically sourced and picked) coffee in hand. Cole Café and Deli is the place to go for a leisurely brunch – think (the ever popular) avocado with chilli lime and feta topped sourdough toast, homemade granola and compote, or a proper scone with real organic farmhouse butter.

KITH & KIN
172 Park View, Whitley Bay NE26 3QW
www.eveogilvie.co.uk
With a brunch menu made up of dishes inspired from around the globe, you can travel to Australia for an Aussie-inspired fried eggs with hummus and sautéed mushrooms and kale, or to Mexico for a toasted flatbread topped with spicy salsa, fried eggs, crispy bacon and a dollop of cool sour cream.
