Quay Ingredient, Newcastle Quayside

As well as tapas, light bites, bistro meals and afternoon tea, Allards Lounge is big on breakfast. Literally. Ernest, Ouseburn Valley
Ernest is cool, quirky and fun, but they take breakfast and brunch seriously. Order the Ernest Large and you probably won’t need to eat for the rest of the day. Feeling fragile? Try Ernest’s hangover cure: chorizo and cheesy beans (homemade) on toast with a bloody Mary or cider. Served until 9pm
Knitsley Farm Shop, Consett
Knitsley Farm was the Love Food Brilliant Breakfast’s Café Regional ‘Winner and Champion’ 2011/12. Like their breakfasts, it’s a bit of a mouthful. They serve a celebration of locally sourced produce that includes free range eggs, homemade black pudding and delicious products like red onion bacon (cured with red onion marmalade) and spicy chorizo sausage. Served until 11.30pm

Wow. You need to try the croissants at this place – the plain ones, the chocolate ones and, in fact, just try all their pastries. They’re absolute perfection, which seems slightly odd, seeing as this beloved deli is Sardinian rather than French. What is more predictable is their beautiful coffee to wash it all down. They’ll also make up a Sardinian breakfast if you ask. Served all day
The Running Fox, Felton
Taking advantage of the on-site artisan bakery, The Running Fox serve sweet treats like pecan and toffee scones, freshly baked pain au chocolate, croissants as well as a full English with black and white pudding. The Café is also a newsagent so you can pick up a paper while you wait to be served. Served until 3pm

They serve dishes like the Breakfast Stack (bacon and sausage piled on an English muffin drizzled in sauce), Buttermilk Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, Bananas on Toast (served with honey) and Eggs Waldorf (toasted English muffin with field mushrooms and poached eggs topped with hollandaise). God bless America. Served until 4pm

Robineau Patisserie, Darlington
Robineau's full English comes with a potato rosti topped with sweet cured back bacon and eggs of your choice, herb and sun dried tomato sausage, tomato and a grilled mushroom filled with Nigel Alderson's homemade black pudding and toasted Robineau bread. They also do French toast made from their own brioche soaked in sweetened eggy bread mixture made from milk eggs and sugar, it's then pan fried and served with a warm berry compote. Served until 11.30am
The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle
The recently refurbished Café Bowes is a great place to start the day, and you don't have to be visiting the fantastic museum either (though it would be rude not to). The Café is also renowned for their homemade scones and afternoon tea. Served until 12pm
