The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa has just been presented four AA rosettes at the 21st annual AA Hospitality Awards at Grosvenor House in London. They were one of only seven restaurants on the night to receive the award, which was presented to them by TV personality Claudia Winkleman in front of the crème de la crème of British hospitality. Receiving four AA rosettes is a great achievement and is certainly a very proud moment for Head Chef Paul Leonard, formerly of Michelin-starred Isle of Eriska in Scotland, and his team, including Restaurant Manager Jack Adams, who attended the Awards evening.
There are only 46 restaurants with four rosettes in this year’s guide, including only three in Yorkshire and Managing Director of The Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants Group Richard Palmer is understandably over the moon with this reward for all their hard work. ‘I am delighted with the progress Paul has made after only just over a year in the role,’ he says. ‘He, Jack and the team have made us so proud. Awards of this standing are a testimony to the commitment that the team deliver round the clock, each and every day. The achievement puts The Devonshire Arms forefront of mind as a destination which delivers award-winning hospitality, combined with the one of most beautiful locations in Yorkshire.’
According to AA guidelines, for a restaurant to be presented four rosettes, they have to be able to demonstrate ‘intense ambition, a passion for excellence, superb technical skills, remarkable consistency, and an appreciation of culinary traditions combined with a passionate desire for further quality and improvement’. Quite the compliment, and one that is richly deserved by the team at The Burlington, who pride themselves on presenting diners with a colourful and vibrant array of fresh, seasonal produce, much of which is grown by Paul and his team in the walled kitchen gardens at the hotel, which are transformed into mouth-watering à la carte, taster and vegetarian menus.
The AA rosettes are a hugely prestigious award and, like Michelin stars, are awarded after an anonymous inspection proves that the restaurant is of a high enough quality to warrant one. Only one in ten restaurants are presented with even one rosette, so to get four puts The Burlington among the very best restaurants in Britain.
