‘The Naked Deli on Heaton’s Chillingham Road has a vast menu and ever-changing specials board that revolves around fresh, nutritious and natural ingredients’

Go Naked
Finally, a healthy deli is catering for clean, paleo, organic, health eating, making it available on the go or sitting in. The Naked Deli on Heaton’s Chillingham Road has a vast menu and ever-changing specials board that revolves around fresh, nutritious and natural ingredients. We like the sound of their super food steak salad, which includes crispy kale, roast pepper quinoa, carrot and green beans with toasted sesame seeds, chill soy and garlic dressing. The Bigger Picture
The Balman Gallery in Corbridge now has a café serving fresh homemade food. Open seven days a week, the gallery was keen to extend its offering to visitors who browse the gallery’s contemporary artwork. Expect to find a variety of delicious cakes, salads, scones, paninis, breakfasts, brunches and lunches to enjoy. Tea and coffee will be served in vintage china cups, including a speciality caffe crema – an espresso topped with whipped Italian ice cream. Café @ Balman Gallery, Princes Street, Corbridge 01434 633698

‘We are not surprised that the uniqueness of the gallery setting and the lovely homemade cakes and lunches have already proved a hit with our customers. We look forward to it becoming established on the Corbridge Café circuit ’ Director, Andy Balman

Life’s a Beach
The Beach House is a contemporary bistro that has opened on the new Pier Point development at Marina Walk. It’s fun and family-friendly, serving signature seafood and gourmet burgers. There’s a nautical theme with an ice cream parlour and views of Roker Pier to enjoy. Run by 1879 Events Management, who also look after catering and events at the Stadium of Light, there’s lots of Sunderland AFC pictures and memorabilia to admire, making it a must visit for fans of the Black Cats. New Nudo
Nudo Sushi Box are opening a fourth high street sushi outlet in mid-September. Their easy to order sushi is already available in Jesmond, Sunderland and on Newcastle’s Northumberland Street, and now they have taken over a unit at the top of Newcastle’s Grainger Street, near Grey’s Monument. They will be serving freshly prepared sashimi selections, futomaki and nigri boxes, salads and sides or ‘small eats’ as they call them, plus a variety of soup noodle options. Grainger Street, Newcastle

Hop To It
We queued for 45 minutes to get into Hop & Cleaver’s launch event and are pleased to report it was worth the wait. Housed in what was Offshore on Newcastle’s Quayside, the original cobbles and 17th century Jacobean timber frames have been salvaged with £700,000 spent on a rustic renovation. Set up by the same group who have brought a speciality gin bar (Pleased to Meet You) and pie restaurant (Redhouse) to Newcastle, Hop & Cleaver’s forte is barbeque. They’ve imported smoking ovens from Oklahoma which will be fired with special fruit woods to give local, pure bred meat a delicious and delicate flavour. They also make their own spice rubs, brew their own beer and serve over 50 rare bourbons imported from the USA. Sandhill, Newcastle
