CEREC

What is it?
You can forget unsightly metal fillings, second appointments and repeat local anesthetic injections with CEREC technology, which delivers outstanding aesthetic restorations in one appointment.

How does it work?
After your tooth has been prepared for treatment and old filling material has been removed, a scan is taken. This scan is then used by dentists to design the perfect ceramic to restore your tooth to its best shape, size and form.

The dentist will then select a ceramic block from a huge range of sizes and colours. This block will be milled to the desired size and shape, usually in less than 10 minutes. It is then glazed and permanently cemented in place.

The Cosmetic Dental Clinic in Newcastle currently has four dentists trained in the use of CEREC technology, and they regularly use CEREC in their general and cosmetic dentistry.

Implants

What is it?
Implants are a way of replacing missing teeth, whether lost through injury or illness. A post is planted in the jaw bone to support a replacement tooth, and this acts like the root of a natural tooth. Implants can also be used to support fixed bridges or dentures.

How does it work?
Implant treatment normally works in stages. First, the implant is placed in the jaw under local anesthetic and the gum is stitched so that it heals over the implant. A temporary crown will then be fitted. Under the gum the bone will grow round and through the implant to hold it firm. This usually takes six to eight weeks. When the jaw has healed, replacement teeth are attached to the implant.

Invisalign

What is it?
More than 2.5 million people worldwide have used Invisalign, which straightens teeth using a series of almost invisible, removable aligners custom-made for you. As you replace each aligner your teeth will move gradually towards the projected final position. They’re comfortable, clear and removable – it’s no wonder they’re so popular.

How does it work?
Your dentist takes impressions from your teeth which are used to create custom-made aligners personal to you. These aligners can be removed to eat, maintain good oral hygiene and even for the odd special occasion. There are no metal wires or brackets to bother your mouth and gums, but it can be uncomfortable when you insert a new aligner at the beginning of a new treatment stage.

The Orthodontic Practice offers a range of brace options including Invisalign. They also offer out of hours emergency cover during your treatment, and post-treatment care and advice on how to maintain your healthy, happy smile.

Teeth Whitening

What is it?
This one is fairly straightforward in theory. Nobody wants to scare the children with their yellow pegs, so teeth whitening has become part of many dental routines.

How does it work?
There are loads of things you can do at home to make your teeth whiter, including specialist toothpastes, but only dentists have access to professional-strength whitening treatments, and the General Dental Council stresses that teeth whitening treatments should only ever be carried out by registered dental professionals. Only a trained dentist can safely carry out whitening treatments to make sure the treatment is right for you and help protect your gums and enamel during the process.

Where can I get it?
First-time clients get free consultation with a dental nurse at Cestria Dental Practice, and they offer hugely popular Philips Zoom whitening treatments.

Veneers

What is it?
Porcelain laminate veneers are a shell placed over the front surface of your teeth to enhance or correct their appearance. They’re a pleasantly conservative way of dramatically changing the appearance of your teeth.

How does it work?
The dentist will begin by scraping away an extremely thin layer of the tooth’s enamel, making room for the veneer. This means the tooth doesn’t become too bulky and awkward in your mouth and also prepares the surface of the tooth for bonding. After this, a dental putty will be used to make an impression of your mouth, which will then be used to make the veneers.

When it is time to cement the veneer on to the tooth, your tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. The cement will be placed on the veneer and the veneer put into place. A special curing light will activate compounds in the cement so that it adheres almost instantly.

Orthodontics

What is it?
Braces are no longer solely the preserve of gangly youths – cosmetic orthodontics for adults are big business. There’s really no need to be self-conscious and unhappy about your teeth these days, with adult cosmetic braces to straighten teeth so widely available.

How does it work?
Brackets are attached to the teeth and used to secure a wire, which can be tightened to put gentle but constant pressure on teeth. This slowly moves them into the correct position. The pressure doesn’t need to be strong but it does need to be constant.

Rather than a ‘one brace fits all’ approach, Wearside Orthodontics offer five different types of appliance, so your brace will be the best fit for you and your teeth.

Gum Contouring

What is it?
Even if you’ve got beautiful pearly white teeth, your gums might let you down. Gummy smiles are caused by overgrowth of the gum tissue. This can make gums look too big or prominent, and can cause your smile to look crooked or lop-sided. Gum contouring is the solution.

How does it work?
Your dentist will apply a local anaesthetic to your gums, and then use a laser to trim away small amounts of excess gum tissue and reshape the edges of the gums above the six front teeth that form your smile. The laser also seals the blood vessels in the gums, meaning the tissue can heal quickly and without causing you too much discomfort.

Vampire Facial

What is it?
The Vampire Facial is also know as platelet rich plasma (PRP) skin rejuvenation. Platelets occur naturally in blood and play an important role in healing wounds and tissue regeneration. PRP makes use of the natural potential within your blood to improve the overall texture and tone of your skin.

How does it work?
This is not one for the squeamish. A small sample of your own blood (around 60ml) is taken and put through a highly specialised process designed to extract the platelet rich plasma safely. This PRP is then injected back into your skin.

Higgins and Winter Dental Practice offer PRP skin rejuvenation in addition to their facial aesthetics services, and recommend the treatment as being suitable for patients with tired and dry skin, uneven pigmentation, acne scarring and signs of ageing.

Facial Aesthetics

What is it?
There are two major signs of facial ageing; dynamic lines (which are due to muscular hyperactivity), and static lines (which are due to volume loss). Facial aesthetics treat both of these.

How does it work?
Various treatments come under the umbrella of facial aesthetics. They include injections which relax muscles and therefore treat dynamic facial lines. Facial fillers replace lost volume by replenishing the natural collagen and elastin found in the skin. Micro needling stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin to create a smooth and even skin tone, while skin peels remove dead cells from the surface of the skin. They should all leave skin looking and feeling smoother, fresher and firmer.

The Smile Spa offers the latest in wrinkle relaxation and facial rejuvenation techniques using a combination of anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers to complement your smile.
