Sunderland’s newest cocktail bar, healthy deli pots to go in Jesmond and a stonking beer garden in the Borders

If you like: Healthy food to go
Then try: Filmore and Union, Newcastle
You might know Filmore and Union as the railway station standby which is several cuts above your average sad sandwich dispensary, with freshly made porridge and takeaway deli pots. Now they’re opening in Jesmond too, with juices, breakfasts, brunches, coffees, and an indie outlook.

If you like: Scottish simplicity
Then try: The Allanton Inn, Berwick
Yes, it’s the tiniest of hops over the border but it’s definitely worth it. There’s nothing particularly flash here, just straightforward country classics like cured and smoked game and fish landed at Eyemouth and treated with care. Brave the January nip and you’ll be rewarded with one of the best beer garden views in the North.

If you like: Cocktails and quirk
Then try: P’s & Q’s, Sunderland
This slightly rustic-looking bar next to Thornhill Park is brand new but has already got a bit of a rep for its smart twists on classic cocktails – see the Forbidden Forest, which packs in raspberry, strawberry, blueberry and cherry flavours.
