6 Fun Places to Pop the Question

Marriage proposal in sand
Did you know that 20 March is National Proposal Day? If you’re planning to pop the question, don’t be clichéd. We’ve picked out some of the North’s more unusual spots

Best for: outdoorsy types
Let a stone do the talking for you: there’s a rock off a popular trail in Northumberland National Park with a proposal carved into it. If your initials are K and J you’re in luck – find out why here
Simonside, Rothbury

Best for: film buffs
Hire out a room at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle, pick a film with positive vibes for spending your lives together – avoid romcoms with wedding breakdowns – and pop the question when the time’s right. Don’t put the ring in the popcorn: you don’t want to remember your proposal for a broken tooth.
Pilgrim Street, Newcastle

Best for: technology geeks
Head to Longsands beach, find a quiet spot and send in a drone carrying your marriage proposal inside. Just watch the North East wind doesn’t blow it out to sea instead.
Longsands, Tynemouth

Best for: folklore fans
The next best thing to Sherwood Forest, the fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay offers a quaint spot to get down on one knee and holds an association with the legendary figure (if that’s your thing).
Robin Hood’s Bay, Nr Whitby

Best for: free spirits
Spurn Point’s stretch of sand into the sea is the ideal spot to pop the question if you’re big fans of fresh air and nature, and want a pretty spot to return to for anniversaries.
Spurn Point, Hull

Best for: couples who like taking things easy
Take a ride up Saltburn’s funicular and propose with a rising sea view. Just hope for a ‘yes’ or it’ll be an awkward ride all the way down.
