Become a Foster Carer with Gateshead Council to change a child’s life

Fostering a child is one of the most rewarding activities you can do

We all know from our own childhood how important it is to be cared for by supportive and responsible adults, who will guide our development. Now, you have the chance to provide that care to vulnerable children who need stability and support in their lives.

Gateshead Council is recruiting new Foster Carers to look after children of all ages from around the Gateshead area. The timescales for care are hugely varied – some children need homes for a weekend or a few weeks, whereas others need to stay for months, years or even longer. If you have fostered before and would like to return, or if you have ever thought about starting, then now is the time to take the next step.

The Council offer a weekly fostering fee as well as a child allowance, and a high-quality training and support package. You need to be over 21 and live within a 20 mile radius of Gateshead Civic Centre, but most importantly you need to have the right character. Patience, understanding, tolerance and resilience are all required, and you’ll need the time, energy and space in your home (including a spare bedroom) to look after a child in need.

If you think that you can give a vulnerable child the safe and secure environment they need, then contact Gateshead Council Fostering Service for more information on 0191 433 8333 or email

You could also pop along to the next information evenings on either Wednesday 28 November or 30 January (5.30pm at Gateshead Civic Centre).
