Discover the animals, birds and insects that also call the North East their home in these stunning photos captured by the winners of the fifth North East Wildlife Photography Competition

Five years ago, Northumberland, Durham and Tees Valley Wildlife Trusts organised a photography competition in partnership with the Natural History Society of Northumbria, Alan Hewitt Photography and the Great North Museum: Hancock, in order to celebrate the region’s gorgeous landscape. This year’s entries were just as outstanding as past years, across all the sections. Here are the winners…

In the Wildlife in Action section, Mark Bowen replicated the iconic Angel of the North with a photo of the same name. His take on Anthony Gormley’s sculpture was a cuckoo landing, and mimicking the angel’s pose.

Pippa Maddison was victorious in the Wildlife in the Landscape category, with a moody shot of a gull in flight over the ocean, against a backdrop of cliffs and the day breaking.

There was even a Young People’s category to acknowledge talent of all ages, and first place went to 14 year-old Kyra Sudlow from Ashington, for a snap of a stonechat bird at Cresswell Sond reserve on Druridge Bay.

The public got to have their say in the Wildlife Portraits section, and their hearts were melted by Matthew Smith’s picture of a fluffy Canada gosling at Killingworth Lake.

Flying away from birds, Elizabeth Doley took a photo of sleeping orange-tip butterflies on her phone, which earned her the Mobile Nature prize.

The worthy winner of this year’s overall competition was Marcus Kidd, for his incredibly detailed image of a migrant hawker dragonfly, which is a big leap away from his beastly photographs of grizzly bears in Canada and lions and rhinos in Africa. The photo naturally also won the Nature Close-up category.
