Want to lose a few pounds before the Christmas binge? Then why not recruit some friends, lace up your boots and test yourself at one of these upcoming races

1. Round Ripon Ultra 35 - 1 October, Ripon

If you’re going to do this, you may as well do it properly. 5km – you’d barely break a sweat. 10km – no problem. Half marathon – just for wimps. Marathon – we’re hardy Northerns don’t you know. A 35 mile scenic run through Studley Royal deer park? Now we’re talking. This is your chance to really show ‘em what you’re made of.

2. Kielder 10K - 1 October, Kielder Water and Forest Park

Right, come on, you can do this... A steady 10km jaunt. By the time you’ve stocked up on water, created your perfect running playlist and indulged in a energy gel or two (a sweet sugary kick followed by a rush of caffeine), you’ll be striding over the finish line and taking your first gulp of that well-earned, post-race pint.

3. The Yorkshire Marathon - 9 October, York

Are you ready for this? A 26.2 mile run through the city of York, the Yorkshire Marathon takes in iconic sights like York Minster, the city walls and the University of York before stretching out to Stamford Bridge and Buttercrambe Moor Wood. Mo Farah eat your heart out.

4. Newcastle Stampede - 22–23 October, High Gosforth Park

Are you ready for this? Run in aid of the British Heart Foundation’s Mending Broken Hearts appeal, this is a 10k for runners with style, stamina and a touch of insanity. Tkae on the hay bales, underground tunnels, water slides and mud swamps to race your victory. Only for the hardy types, this is your chance to really show ‘em what you’re made of.
