MAKE MY WEEK | Living North

make my week
Who said weekdays are boring? We’re heading out to see some rib-cracking comedy and an unmissable tribute to a music legend, warming up with a tipple by the fire and filling our boots with an entirely chocolate-based afternoon tea

Adam Kay is the author of award-winning and best-selling book, This Is Going To Hurt. It’s an expose-cum-comedy that makes you laugh out loud, and a tell-all to alter our preconceived ideas of the lives of doctors. Giving you the honest low down on what it’s like to hold your own life together, while saving the lives of others (with all the gory details) on the front line of our beloved NHS. And tonight, he’s revealing more as he shares entries from his diaries as a junior doctor in an electrifying evening of stand-up and music.

For one night only, get to the York Barbican and experience the music of one of the queens of soul. At Last – The Etta James Story tells the tale of Etta’s tumultuous life, from the highs of world-wide fame to the tragedy of her abuse and addiction, all punctuated by performances of some of her best known songs. This Australian production – which has had three seasons at the Sydney Opera House – is not one to miss.

The nights are drawing in, so come in out of the cold and cosy up in front of the blazing fire in The Pele Tower Pub’s stunning medieval fireplace. Dating from 1300 AD and now home to a thriving micro-pub and brewery, Corbridge’s Pele Tower is a truly unique setting, with intimate nooks aplenty. The impressive range of craft ales is complemented by over 50 gins, 30 whiskeys and 30 rums, so get your tasting notes ready.

Calling all Chocolate lovers. Cocoa Wonderland is a chocolate shop and café in the hills surrounding Sheffield offering an emporium of wonder and delight. Run by two best friends who refused to grow up, they produce chocolate made in their very own chocolate factory. Why not start the weekend early with a visit and try their speciality afternoon tea offering (yes it really is entirely chocolate themed), with a host of dainty sweet and savoury chocolate–infused delights, liquid chocolate and even chocolate tea – it’s perfect for those with a (very) sweet tooth.
