A Royal Affair

Afternoon tea with prosecco
Dress up and get a slice of the action with our pick of the best Royal Wedding-themed events taking place this weekend

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to marry in one of the most publicised events of 2018, and if your invite got lost in the post, we’ve got your back. Giving you the perfect excuse to dress up and get a slice of the action, we’ve gathered our pick of the best events taking place across the North East and Yorkshire — after all, there is no better way to celebrate a royal affair than with a quintessentially British afternoon tea. With the wedding landing on a Saturday, you’ve no need to worry about raising a toast (or two) to the bride and groom and enjoying the festivities.

Rockcliffe Hall
If you’re in favour of a fancy affair, walk the red carpet at Rockcliffe Hall and enjoy their renowned afternoon tea. Watch the ceremony take place while your afternoon tea is served, before raising a glass to the happy couple — you’ll need to dig out your hat for this one!
Darlington, County Durham DL2 2DU

Curve Bar
Expect the classic afternoon tea offerings of finger sandwiches, cakes and scones, served in the luxury champagne bar with a glass of fizz, alongside the live action from 11:30am.  The couples’ lemon and elderflower spring cake will be recreated to celebrate the big day.

Walwick Hall
The feast on offer here is certainly fit for a royal — or a royal wedding. Relax in the Drawing Room as you indulge in mini asparagus and stilton quiche, sausage rolls and finger sandwiches, before raising a glass of English fizz to toast the newlyweds.
Humshaugh, Hexham, Northumberland NE46 4BJ

Castle Howard
Celebrate the royal wedding with a beautifully-themed afternoon tea at Castle Howard. Enjoy artisan bread sandwiches, handmade pastries and traditional scones in the Grecian Hall. Make sure you take advantage of the access to the House and Gardens, included in your Afternoon Tea experience, and don’t forget to take away your commemorative plate as a token of the special occasion.

Matfen Hall
What better way to get involved in the royal celebrations than with a three-course brunch? Watch the wedding build up on the big screen while helping yourself to a selection of pastries, fruit and continental meats. Then sit down to enjoy the royal nuptials and your selection of brunch, with choices from scrambled eggs and truffle to seared steak and egg. Finish with a celebratory glass of fizz and a sweet treat.

The Grand Hotel
Boasting an impressive reputation for afternoon tea, we’re confident The Grand Hotel’s Royal Wedding edition won’t disappoint. Set in the historic Grand Boardroom, watch the Royal Ceremony unfold as you indulge in sandwiches and savouries — just save space for the cake and champagne that will follow!
