Top 12 Campsites Across the North
Places to go
July 2016
Reading time 3 Minutes
When the weather's good (and there's the rub) there's nothing quite like camping - here are 12 of the region's best campsites

The North East's top campsites

Kielder Village Caravan and Camping Site
Located just outside Kielder Village, at the northern tip of Kielder Water, the campsite is the perfect base for enjoying Kielder Water & Forest Park. The site has all the facilities you’d expect, including a play park and limited free wifi coverage, but no mobile phone reception. Warning – this campsite is populated with midgies, so we recommend repellent, tea tree oil and a flame-thrower if you have one.

Herding Hill Farm, Haltwhistle
Slap bang in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall country, this campsite is located on a farm that specialises in rare breed meats and offers pitches for tents and caravans, as well as wigwams, tipis, bell tents and a luxury six-berth lodge. It boasts top-notch facilities, including washing and showering facilities that would put a lot of hotels to shame, and – this had us sold – it also offers a home-baked pizza takeaway service.

Leekworth Caravan and Camping Park, Middleton-in-Teesdale
Located on the banks of the River Tees amid glorious countryside on the outskirts of Middleton-in-Teesdale, this is one of the region’s prettiest campsites. With the famous Teesdale Way running alongside the site, it’s a perfect base for walkers and, with 1,000m of free fishing (rod licence required) along the banks of the river, it’s also a fisherman’s paradise.

Shepherd’s Hut, Winlaton Mill
Located in the grounds of Hagg Hill Farm in the lovely Derwent Valley, Shepherd’s Hut is the ultimate glamping experience. This cosy, handcrafted hut sleeps up to four people (for a bit extra you can pitch a tent alongside) and has a log-burning stove, a one-ring hob, a balcony, BBQ and picnic table – you just need to bring yourselves, some grub and maybe a bottle of vino or two.

Burns Farms, Keswick
This traditional, family-run site is located on a quiet working farm three miles from Keswick. Perched on a hill, it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and uninterrupted sunshine (when it’s there). With good on-site facilities, it’s the perfect base for exploring mountains such as Blencathra, Skiddaw, Catrigg and Skafell Pike.

Springhill Farm, Seahouses
Set amid stunning Northumberland scenery only a mile from Seahouses and three miles from Bamburgh, Springhill Farm offers a range of holiday accommodation, including self-catering accommodation (The Lookout sleeps up to 32 people), glamping wigwams and pitches for tents and caravans. Alongside the usual facilities, it also has a family bathroom, wifi, playpark and picnic areas, making it perfect for families.

Catgill Campsite, Bolton Abbey
Only a mile from Bolton Abbey, this family-friendly campsite has only been open a couple of years but has already amassed an impressive collection of excellent review. Hooks House Farm , Robin Hoods Bay
Robin’s Hood Bay has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Yorkshire, so a campsite that’s only a 10-minute walk away carries a lot of appeal. Hooks House Farm offers more than just its location, however, it also boasts very good facilities and a relaxed, friendly environment.
