When The Ships Come In

Tall Ships
It’s one of the biggest cultural festivals in the North East, so as the Tall Ships Races Sunderland 2018 draws closer, don’t miss your chance to sail-erbrate in style

Sunderland is set to welcome a majestic fleet of Tall Ships on 10th July to take part in a colourful, four-day festival of culture and entertainment across the city, before they set sail to compete in the first leg of The Tall Ships Races 2018.

And as the starting host port for the month-long international races, Sunderland has lined up a jam-packed schedule of entertainment, bursting with circus acts, live music, unique theatre experiences and dance performances, as over 50 ships from all over the world – including as afar afield as India and Vanuatu – get ready to embark on the first leg of the races, to Esbjerg in Denmark.

But don’t get duped into believing this world-class event is just for spectators; for all you landlubbers longing to earn your sea legs, you can now get right in amongst the action and experience a unique Tall Ships cruise, and the exclusive chance to join crew members on one of these spectacular sailing vessels.

Climb aboard these incredible ships and walk their decks, feel the wind in their sails and gain some niche nautical knowledge from the experts, who have sailed all corners of the seven seas –  just be sure not to walk the plank as they hoist the Jolly Roger for an all-hands-on-deck pirate-themed party onboard, set to be truly arr-mazing.

Best of all, you’ll have the perfect vantage point to enjoy the captivating programme of entertainment on shore – from high wire thrills to performances played out on giant chessboards – so there’s definitely something to float everyone’s boat.

Sunderland will welcome the Tall Ships Races 2018 between 10th–14th July.
