It’s perhaps difficult to journey through life without ever chancing upon a special place. For some this can be good old home sweet home, for others it’s potentially a happy place from childhood, or perhaps a place to escape the daily humdrum. For us, its a holiday on the Northumberland Coast. Mind you even that has many guises. Our most familiar and favoured is a special place with a view south towards Dunstanburgh Castle. Recently, however, this titan of our affections received some unexpected competition from a special hideaway in Alnmouth.
South View House is aptly named, at least in part. Its ever-changing, expansive views to the south across the estuary to Coquet Island are worthy of special mention alone. South View is however, no longer a house but three meticulously refurbished, state-of-the-art, contemporary apartments. Ours was the penthouse and it was amazing – cleverly combining character and charm with a host of contemporary features – including a loft-style kitchen/ sitting room with floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors leading out onto a wide, decked balcony – and that view.
Today as I write it’s early June, the coast is busy. We were there out of season, and while the weather may have been less kind, the off-seasonal quiet was still hugely appealing. We may not have had the chance to sip an aperitif in the sunshine on our balcony, but we did snuggle up with a hot drink and blanket, tucked below the glass balustrade, and drink in the unbeatable sunsets from our lofty position. The uninterrupted views were never the same. The tidal estuary, the huge skies and always-changing beach and rocks below made for addictive viewing. When the weather drove us inside we could still admire the scenery from the safety of our eyrie.
The large, open-plan loft apartment had all mod cons, including a well-equipped kitchen and utility, a large flat-screen TV, electronic blinds, touch screen lighting and two large leather sofas. The kitchen table may have been a tad small for six, but its position in front of the windows made up for any lack of elbow room. Great for families, and dog-friendly too, there are three comfortable double/twin rooms, all ensuite, and there’s even a lift which opens directly into the apartment – perfect for lugging all those groceries up – and avoiding the stairs. For those who want the exercise, there’s a communal gym on the ground floor.
Alnmouth village maybe compact but there’s a lot to discover. It has a popular golf course, a busy sailing club and vast sandy beaches. It also has a few good restaurants, a great deli-cum-coffee-shop and bistro, a friendly village store and several popular pubs. We tried most of them and were amazed to find just how different each was in terms of character and clientele. It’s also extremely handy for the busy main London to Edinburgh train line which stops at the nearby station (approximately one and a half miles away) making it an easy 45 minutes from Newcastle and only slightly longer from Edinburgh’s Waverley. Just 10 minutes by car from Alnwick with its well known attractions, and the same distance from picturesque Warkworth, it is a great base for exploring all, or any, of the surrounding coast.
That’s if you can drag yourself away from the view of course…
