Start preparations well in advance to ensure you look your absolute best on the big day
‘Do a test run. Have your hair and make-up done, and if you’re planning on tanning, make sure you test it in advance to ensure you’re happy’

Six months to go...
Starting your beauty preparations well in advance means (hopefully) avoiding a last-minute panic. Make changes to your exercise routine now. Exercise bootcamps have become popular in recent years, and people are increasingly investing in personal trainers. Wherever it is you want to trim down, a personal trainer can tailor workouts to suit you. Planning ahead does however mean that you don’t have to work quite as hard so if you’d prefer a gentler workout, pilates and yoga help tone and also keep you calm and relaxed as the big day draws closer.

Five months to go...
We all know that what we put into our body matters. But food and drink doesn’t just affect our weight. There are all sorts of factors to consider when altering our diet – skin, hair, nails and of course energy levels. When it comes to planning the perfect wedding, you need all the energy you can get. So think green. Lots of dark, leafy vegetables will boost energy levels as well as help circulation and improve skin’s elasticity. Water is also key for dewy, glowing skin. Drinking at least two litres per day will keep you hydrated and have you looking radiant.

Four months to go...
Introduce a serious skincare regime and stick to it. Applying too many lotions, potions and serums will bombard skin. Talk to an expert about facials to deal with various factors which might cause skin problems and affect skin surface and texture. Talk to a therapist and find out which treatments are best for you. At home, cleanse daily and exfoliate twice a week. Exfoliating too often can dry out skin. Last but not least, moisturise. Contrary to popular belief, moisturisers don’t necessarily add moisture to skin, they lock in moisture, so apply immediately after a shower for beautifully hydrated skin.

Three months to go...
Does styling your own hair fill you with dread? Meet with your hairdresser and discuss possible styles. It’s amazing what professionals can do so listen to their advice and be realistic. Keep on top of your cut and colour but don’t go overboard. Follow the advice you’re given to ensure hair is at a suitable length when the big day arrives. And don’t forget, book your wedding day appointment, giving plenty of time to avoid a last-minute hair-mare.

Two months to go...
If you don’t feel confident doing your own make-up, book a make-up artist. Having a professional do your make-up will reassure you and hopefully won’t result in that awful drag queen look. Wedding make-up should be simple and natural but more special than your everyday make-up. There are plenty of local make-up artists to choose from so don’t just go for the first one you find. Take time to research and find the perfect person but don’t leave it until the last minute.

One month to go...
The big day is approaching fast and everything is booked, but what if something goes wrong? Do a test run. Have your hair and make-up done, and if you’re planning on tanning, make sure you test it in advance to ensure you’re happy with the colour. A spray tan will have you looking beautifully bronzed in just 15 minutes, but make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.

One week to go...
Only one week to go until the big day. Don’t make any last-minute changes to your beauty regime and your skin should be glowing. Organise any finishing touches. Have your eyebrows shaped, nails done, and if you want luscious lashes, try tinting or semi-permanent eyelashes. Eyelash enhancements add length and definition so you won’t have to worry about your mascara running when it comes to the speeches. To avoid ugly streaks, go pro.
