Clucking good gourmet fried chicken, Trinidadian treats and a top new brunch place from one of Hull’s best chefs

If you like: Clucking good chicken
Then try: Fowl Play, Newcastle
What came first, the chicken or the delicious buttermilk deep-fried casement which would, presumably, have been simply waiting for the perfect flightless bird to wrap itself around had it come first? We may never know. However, this lot will be at Hadrian’s Tipi on Pilgrim Street until January doing fried chicken buns, trays of chicken with buttermilk waffles, wings, fries and buckets.

If you like: Caribbean cool
Then try: The Calabash Tree, North East-wide
Finalists at the British Street Food awards this year, the Trinidadian-inspired food includes stuff like curried goat, beef stew with coconut, bake and shark (a traditional breakfast nibble involving crispy coated cod toped with tamarind and pepper sauces) and more. They do private dining and supper club events as well as popping up at food markets around the region.

If you like: A really, really good brunch place
Then try: Riverhouse Coffee Co, Hull
Chris Harrison’s super-pub The Old House now has a brunch-centric sister next door in the Old Town, after deciding to sort out the lack of a good coffee shop in the area themselves. They get their beans from El Salvador, have them blended at The Blending Room in Hull, and do pastries, cakes and upscale brunches too.
