Palate Freshener: super seafood and splendid gins

Gin and tonic
This time: French-informed plates in Mickleton, a new seafood hangout in Ponteland, and a gin bar in an 18th century stable in Pickering

If you like: Quality seafood
Then try: Catch, Ponteland
Adding to their Yorkshire spots in West Vale and Holmfirth, the seafood specialists have moved up north. By all accounts their tastefully nautical vibe and assured plates like the seafood thermidor have ensured they’ve already – hold onto your sides, guys! – made a splash. Ho ho ho.

If you like: Understated excellence
Then try: The Crown, Mickleton
This gastropub has quietly made itself an under-the-radar hit, with a menu of French-informed plates like roasted chicken ballotine with braised lettuce and an unfussy feel, plus a deeply inviting beer garden and the huge Teesdale skies above you.

If you like: A new gin a week
Then try: Whistlers, Pickering
Set in a stable built in 1740, this freshly primped bar’s moved with the times and is now home to more than 60 gins, regular tasting events with Yorkshire’s gin makers, live music and a well-regarded microbrewery.
