Feelgood File – Relax, Take it Easy

A spa day so relaxing it results in an unintended snore – we're in
‘So relaxing was the treatment, complemented by rich, lavender-infused oils, that my companion emitted an almighty snore midway through the back massage’

Musky incense, soft music and the popping of a champagne cork; three of my favourite things and, incidentally, three of the things that greeted us as we arrived at Kuki Spa. So far, so heavenly. The spa is housed in a beautiful listed building, dating back to 1922, which has retained many original features, such as its oak panelling, servant bell system and open fires. Tucked away in York’s quiet suburb of Huntington, we were hidden away from the hubbub of the city; as we wandered through the back doors onto the tranquil relaxation deck, we were met with nothing but the singing of birds and the breeze blowing through the trees. And, of course, the bubbling of a Jacuzzi awaiting our arrival.

After spending a blissful morning enjoying the Kuki Spa Experience, which consisted of alternating between the hot tub and the weight loss sauna (the positive effects of which we swiftly rendered pointless with a bottle of delicious champagne), we headed upstairs eagerly anticipating our treatments. My companion is a new mother and I’m a keen runner, so we were both ready for the massage therapists to ease away our knots and stresses. First was the indulgent aromatherapy full body massage, which was tailored to our requirements; my tense calves and painful feet received a little more TLC than other areas. So relaxing was the treatment, complemented by rich, lavender-infused oils, that my companion emitted an almighty snore midway through the back massage; her therapist assured her this was the highest of compliments.

One blissful hour later, it was time for our Dermalogica facials, which were much more technical and bespoke than I’d anticipated. After a brief discussion over my existing skincare regime (I’m under strict instruction to replace the harsh make-up removal wipes with something more delicate and thorough), my therapist Helen set her magical hands to work with products that would suit my skin type. There was so much work to be done I could barely keep track; pre-cleanse, cleansing gel, daily microfoliant, massage cream, multivitamin complex masque, multivitamin Power Firm, multi active toner, skin smoothing cream, purifying botanical mixer and soothing additive. The effect was astounding. That day, my face was soft and supple, and after a week of small pimples brought to the surface by the steamer, my skin has never been so clear. Even the patchiness I usually cover with foundation has improved so much that I’ve taken to ditching the make-up in lieu of a simple moisturiser.

We opted to swap our Jessica pedicures for a 30 minute manicure instead, complete with a complimentary hand massage. It was the little touches that made our day extra special; the huge fluffy robes we were happily cocooned in, the delicious lunch including fresh fruit and salads galore, and the sublime candles dotted all over the opulent spa. Small details like these set Kuki apart from the wealth of city centre spas vying for our attention and ensure that our first visit won’t be our last.
