A New Look For Turkish Baths, Harrogate

Turkish baths
After decades of making its visitors feel re-energized, Turkish Baths Harrogate has enjoyed some R&R of its own…

Since it first opened in the heart of the historic town in 1897, Turkish Baths Harrogate has been revitalising the mind, body and spirit of customers from across the region and beyond. Featuring a majestic Moorish design, Islamic arches and terrazzo floors laid by Italian craftsmen, the baths remain the most complete surviving 19th century Victorian baths anywhere in Britain.

However, after decades of service – with an estimated 40,000 spa-goers visiting the baths every year – the baths were in need of some much needed TLC. Que their £300,000 refurbishment and the project has seen the re-emergence of grand, vaulted ceilings and the integration of a room specifically for traditional Hammam-style rub downs. Working to enhance the historic character of the stunning Grade II-listed building, the existing facilities have also been upgraded to ensure that the baths continue to thrive well into the future. Taking the traditional Turkish ritual of heating, cooling and cleansing, and complementing it with a wide variety of modern spa treatments, guests can now visit the enhanced spa room, which features foot spas, a spa pool and a tiled aroma room.

Chris Mason, Manager at Turkish Baths Harrogate, says: ‘The final result looks amazing. The spa industry worldwide is booming, but we know that the historic interior of the Turkish baths, with its original Victorian opulence and grandeur, is a huge and unique selling point.’

Despite its historic heritage, Turkish Baths Harrogate continue to offer a number of different packages that are specifically designed to appeal to the modern customer. Guests can indulge in day-long packages or opt for express treatments if time is of the essence. Speaking of the bath’s agenda, Chris adds: ‘A key aim of the project has been to make the journey to the baths as welcoming and easy as possible, from browsing the website, selecting a treatment, walking through the door and enjoying a unique experience.’

We take a look at the best treatments on offer at the Turkish baths this winter:
