MAKE MY WEEKEND… | Living North

From making your own gin, to up-cycling furniture we’re kicking off this weekend with some creativity, before getting involved in an exciting folk festival, and heading down to cheer on our favourite team – the Newcastle Falcons

If you have a passion for fine flavour and a love of all things gin-related, why not visit the Rare Bird Distillery this Friday eve. Nested in a Grade II listed former stable block in Yorkshire’s food and drink capital Malton, you can take part in a session at their on-site ‘Gin School’. On arrival you’ll be greeted with a G&T before learning how to make your own gin using a miniature copper still. You will also receive a 70cl bottle of the gin you have made to take home. Let the evening be-GIN.

Roll up your sleeves and try something a little different this Saturday, with Done Up North’s introduction to furniture painting workshop in Pudsey. You’ll learn all of Nicky’s tips and tricks for up-cycling furniture and how to create the perfect striking patterns – you’ll be revamping all your furniture before you know it.

Enjoy fun music, a great atmosphere and even try a ceilidh at the Hartlepool Folk Festival this Saturday evening. Staged at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, you’ll have a ball walking around the events, which include a number of musical acts and other exciting activities such as talks, drinks and even a cabaret.

Head down to the host of our Christmas Fair, Kingston Park Stadium, to see Newcastle Falcons take on Montpellier in the Falcons first home game in fourteen years at the top table of European competition. And after their close win in Toulon, it’s bound to be an exciting one.

Tired of Monday morning hangovers? You needn’t be three sheets to the wind at this pop-up cocktail event with a difference at Pleased To Meet You, Newcastle. Recognising a need for artisan, low-alcohol beers that deliver on flavour, Small Beer Brew Co set out on a mission to redefine the brewing process. They’ve partnered with master cocktail creators Three Sheets in this showcase event, and will be serving drinks from the boot of their ‘Mini Bar’ – yes, in keeping with the ‘small’ theme, it is actually a Mini – from 4.30pm. Serving a range of easy-to-drink, yet complex cocktails, you can look forward to a big night.
