Yorkshire’s best bakeries are more than simply parkin and soft white cobs. There’s a world of culinary adventure on the cobbled streets of the county’s cities and market towns.

A taste of New York in Yorkshire, Bagel Nash specialise in nine types of bagel, including a gluten free option. The company has expanded from its Leeds base across Yorkshire and beyond, with outlets in York, Hull and Huddersfield.

BOTHAM'S OF WHITBY      

Though Whitby is best known for its fish and chips, Botham’s has been flying the flag for baked goods in the town since 1865, when the current proprietor’s great-grandmother opened her shop. Botham’s pork pies and plum bread are equally in demand among Whitby residents.

THE BREAD SHED

The Bread Shed in Beverley produces loaves from scratch daily from Tuesday to Saturday in its powerful ovens. This isn’t your sliced white, though: they dabble with strong flavours including cheese and Marmite bread. Their stollen is a Christmas-time treat.

HAXBY BAKEHOUSE

Haxby Bakehouse sell their wares weekly at a number of farm shops and markets, and are best known for their slow, fermented sourdough. Need something to top a slice of their bread? They also stock the finest artisan meats, cheeses and pâtés.

LOVEBREAD

A community interest company, LoveBread prides itself on using local ingredients in traditional recipes to produce tasty bread. They also host regular workshops during school holidays, teaching children how to bake their own loaves – without the fear of having to tidy up your kitchen afterwards.

THAT OLD CHESTNUT
