There are some great art classes available at the Mushroom Works in the coming months. Which will you attend?

There must be something about the Ouseburn area of Newcastle that attracts creative types. The Mushroom Works Studio and Art Gallery sits proudly among its contemporaries, and houses a vast range of professional artists – from furniture makers to printers. With all this inspiration in the air, it’s a great place to pick up a new skill, and they run many classes to help you do just that. Here are a few coming up in the next couple of months:

28 FEBRUARY
TUTORED LIFE DRAWING – BEGINNERS

This is a six-week course that runs every Tuesday evening (6.30–8.30pm) and encourages artists to approach drawing in a new way. By going back to the foundations of drawing, you’ll be taught to build up your work until you have a finished piece you can really be proud of.

From line work to tone studies, understanding form to working with your mistakes – instead of resorting to the rubber – this course covers everything you need to build up a working ability to draw well.

£60 per course – all materials and equipment supplied.

1 MARCH
TUTORED LIFE DRAWING – INTERMEDIATE

This six-week course runs every Wednesday evening (6.30–8.30pm). If you’ve mastered the basics and want to take your artwork up a level, this is the class for you. There’ll be new exercises, new materials and deeper understanding.

Lessons will cover landmark points on the body, perspective, surface planes, shadow edges, folds, creases, line and wash techniques and end with a final drawing.

£60 per course – all materials and equipment supplied.

2 MARCH
JUST LIFE DRAWING

This course runs for six weeks (6–8pm) between and is a real free-for-all. If you’re happy with your technique and just want to turn up and draw, this is the course for you. Completely untutored, this class allows you to draw at your own pace, in your own way.

£40 per course – participants must supply their own materials save for drawing boards.

4 MARCH
SILVER CLAY JEWELLERY MAKING WORKSHOP

This three-hour workshop will show you how you can create beautiful jewellery quickly and easily using silver metal clay, which you can then take away with you on the day – an ideal present for that special someone.

You will be shown how to handle the clay and use either texture sheets or natural textures to make patterns in it before the pieces are dried and fired in the kiln. You will then learn how to finish them and add simple findings.

£45 per person including tuition, use of tools and silver metal clay.
