Get set for The Old School Gallery in Alnmouth’s first exhibition of the season, New Northumberland, which starts later this month. Catch the work of Gillian Lee Smith and Paul West, two artists who are new to Northumberland’s creative scene, whose bold contemporary landscape and coastline paintings celebrate everything we love about the local area.
Originally from the East Coast of Scotland, Gillian Lee Smith moved to Northumberland last year after 15 years of city life. Gillian’s mixed media paintings explore heritage and how the past has shaped us, specifically the effect of communities on the landscape. In this exhibition Gillian looks at the way harbour villages mark the place between land and sea. Catch her atmospheric depictions of the cottages of Craster and Boulmer and her more abstract work of harbour walls.
London-based artist Paul West draws inspiration from his frequent trips to visit family in Northumberland and his strong sense of connection with the countryside. His background in graphic design brings a distinctive style to his paintings with a striking use of bold colour broken up with lines. Paul presents us with Northumbrian landscapes in a fresh light while still capturing its beauty.
The exhibition runs from 28 April–9 June with the gallery opening daily between 10am–5pm.
