This beautiful and historic hotel was once the Convent of Mercy, but closed its doors in 2015 as the last sisters left. Now it brings an unparalleled level of style and hospitality to this corner of Northumberland, with an approach to eating, sleeping and service that is second to none. With a guaranteed warm welcome, The Cookie Jar is the epitome of modern hospitality, where nothing is too much trouble.
There are a total of 11 beautiful rooms here, including The Chapel, a vast suite (formerly the convent’s own chapel) with its stainless window still intact, and two Mother Superior rooms with stunning views of nearby Alnwick Castle. The public rooms are cosy with plenty of contemporary, quirky touches which owner Debbie has used throughout the hotel. And whilst it may appeal to the hunting and shooting crowd, (there’s a secure gun room and kennels for the gun dogs), you won’t find your traditional, country house tweed furnishings anywhere in The Cookie Jar.
You will find (unsurprisingly) a complimentary jar of cookies in your room on arrival, plus all the little luxurious touches expected of a hotel of this calibre; all the techno gadgets needed for 21st century living, and Penhaligon toiletries to top it all off.
A delicious breakfast is served daily, as is afternoon tea, but the Bailiffgate Bistro is only open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, (and lunches and afternoon tea Tuesday to Saturday) providing locally-sourced food is lovingly prepared by chef John Blackmore. The Bistro is also available for private functions of up to 32 guests. Beyond the Bistro is a large, south-facing, heated terrace and garden area. At the very bottom of the garden is the hotel’s veg patch, providing earth-to-table produce for the kitchen, and beyond that is the bustling town of Alnwick, the famous castle and The Alnwick Garden – one of the most extraordinary contemporary gardens in England, crammed with quirky corners and playful spaces.
