The Best Places to Get Food To Go

Deli Sandwich
Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or planning an epic picnic, these are our favourite spots for food on the go

Chilli Cake Deli
The menu here is quirky yet concise – The Truffle Man brings together hot chicken, black pudding, watercress and mustard mayo, all drizzled with truffle oil. Ridiculously good.
Zero Baker Street, Middlesbrough TS1 2LF 01642 230268

The Picnic Basket
Voted North East Sandwich Shop of the Year, The Picnic Basket has a cult following among Durham University students, and the list of sandwiches available is one of the longest we’ve ever seen. Try the bang bang chicken.
7 New Elvet, Durham DH1 3AQ 0191 383 1967

Country Whey
As well as freshly made sandwiches, Country Whey also offers proper Italian coffee, homemade cakes, local cheeses and a whole range of deli delights.
8 Clayton Road, Jesmond NE2 4RP 0191 281 4983

Olive & Bean
If you can make it past the outrageously sinful selection of cakes and traybakes (which we never can), the soup and a scone takeaway option is always a winner. The soups change daily, but we love the vegetable balti.
17-19 Clayton Street, Newcastle NE1 5PN 0191 233 0990

Fenwick Food Hall
The famous Food Hall on the ground floor of Fenwick offers an unrivalled selection of artisan products. It’s like the North East’s version of Harrods Food Hall – you could spend all day there. If you fancy something spicy, there’s also a Yo! Sushi offering takeaway boxes.
39 Northumberland Street, Newcastle NE99 1AR 0191 232 5100

Mister Woods
Mister Woods serves up rich fairtrade coffee accompanied by their famously good caramel and Belgian chocolate shortcake. Divine.
42 Front Street, Tynemouth NE30 4BT 0191 257 5556

Shoreline Cafe
Enjoy the chic coastal decor, premium coffee and huge sun terrace in the warm summer months.
3 Church Street, Craster NE66 3TH 01665 571251

Lottie McPhees Cupcakes
An eclectic cupcakery with a vintage feel, Lottie McPhees is famous for its speciality flavours, such as mint cookie crumble and strawberry amaretto.
195 Park View, Whitley Bay NE26 3RD 0191 447 9632

Adriano’s Deli
Any deli that does takeaway lasagna is okay with us. A branch of the deli has also recently opened on Acorn Road in Jesmond.
Gosforth, Newcastle NE3 1HB 0191 284 0000

The iconic North East fish ‘n’ chip shop, and deservedly so. Winner of countless awards, they’ll even give you a special Colmans hot box to take your treats away in.
186 Ocean Road, South Shields NE33 2JQ 0191 456 1202
