The Blagdon Farm Shop
16–18 Milkhope Centre, Berwick Hill Road, Blagdon Newcastle NE13 6DA
Here, you’ll find a farm shop, butchers and bakers (but, unfortunately, no candlestick makers). There aren’t many places that still break down full carcasses and hang the meat in the traditional fashion, but the Blagdon Farm Shop does, while the farm itself supplies fresh fruit and vegetables to the shop every day.
Knitsley Farm Shop
Knitsely, Consett DH8 9EW
A butchery, a bakery, a café, a farm, a shop and a deli are all housed under the Knitsley Farm Shop banner. The meat produced on the farm doesn’t travel very far at all – just to the farm shop’s butchery, in fact. With this in mind, you can be sure that you’re getting only the freshest beef, lamb, pork, bacon, sausage, gammon and ham. Try the black bacon – traditional bacon cured in black treacle, beer, herbs and spices.
Ouseburn Road, Newcastle NE1 2PA
The Ouseburn Farm isn’t just a petting zoo – their knowledgeable staff are on hand to ensure you get the freshest veg possible. Depending on the time of year, produce such as lettuce, kale and a variety of beans is grown here where the gardeners will pick it to order for you. Pop down to the farm, find out what’s ripe and get your order in.

Farnless Farm Park
Bishop Middleham, Ferryhill DL17 9EB
0191 377 1428
In the mood for something a little different to the usual beef for this Sunday’s roast? Take a trip to Farnless Farm Park and pick up some venison or bison for dinner instead. Reared naturally on the farm, grazing on grass pastures, the meat available here is seriously tender and a great alternative to traditional red meats. You can get mince, sausages and burgers too.
East Layton, Richmond DL11 7PN
This farm shop and tea room is run by the Henshaw family and all of their meat products (beef, lamb, pork) are reared on the farm itself, apart from the chicken which is sourced locally. The cows and lambs graze on the farm’s pastures and the meat is allowed to slowly mature – all of this adds up to a delicious tender cut. Sausages, bacon and burgers are also available. If you’re having trouble deciding, pick up a meat box for a range of goodies.
Moorhouse Farm Shop
21 Station Road, Stannington, Morpeth NE61 6DX
At this family-run Northumbrian farm and farmshop, you can pick up some prime beef, pork and lamb. The farm (around four miles from the farm shop) is where the animals graze on 400 acres of grassland and eat feed that the family mix themselves. Moorhouse also does a good range in other local goods including fresh bread, fruit and vegetables – 80 percent of which comes from within 50 miles.
The Green, Piercebridge, Darlington DL2 3SE
The meat stocked in this farm shop comes from the award-winning Piercebridge Farm itself. The farm stretches to some 300 acres and is run completely organically, producing Aberdeen Angus beef, pork from Landrace Duroc pigs, poultry and eggs. The on-site butcher creates a great range of burgers and sausages, as well as bacon, cooked meats and traditional joints.
Sunnyhills Farm Shop
South Road, Belford NE70 7DP
You’ll find fresh bread, eggs, honey, fish, gin, beer, ice cream, fruit, veg, jam – well, you get the idea. There’s a huge amount here and it’s all sourced from reliable, local producers such as Chain Bridge Honey Farm, Allendale Brewery and Doddington Dairy. If you’re after more of a day out than just a shopping trip, stop into the bistro (open for breakfast, lunch and dinner) and enjoy a meal made up of the same fresh ingredients that are for sale in the shop.
New Close Farm Shop
Witton Road, Sacriston, Durham DH7 6NB
0191 371 0565
