Allendale Bakery

This Northumberland bakery produces a range of classic and artisan breads in all shapes and sizes – you need to try their beer bread made using ale from neighbouring Allendale Brewery. They also make delicious buns, biscuits and cakes, and you can learn to make your own delicious loaves on one of their popular bread making courses.

Bread and Roses

They’re specialists in rye sourdough breads here; pick up specialist loaves like a Borodinsky or black pumpernickel as well as more populist breads. Stockists across the region include The Jolly Fisherman in Craster, The Ship Inn at Low Newton and The Good Life Shop in Wooler, and they’re regulars at both Hexham and Alnwick farmers’ markets.

The French Oven

The produce from this award- winning bakery in the Grainger Market is lovingly crafted by its six bakers, who have over 150 years’ experience in the trade between them. The Great Northumberland Bread Company

The artisan breads, sourdoughs, brioche and other treats supplied by The Great Northumberland Bread Company are baked in their unique wood-fired oven, which is fuelled with wood from the Ford and Etal Estate. And the result is simply delicious. They also run baking courses on an ad hoc basis.

Mary Lambert Bakery and Cafe

It’s a café and a chippy that also makes delicious artisan bread and delicious home-baked treats, which you can enjoy in the shop or order online. Try their artisan bread sampler basket – two classic sourdoughs, two chia loaves and six chia rolls for only a tenner, with free local delivery.

Trotters Family Bakers

This much-loved family business has come a long way since it started in 1969. It now boasts six shops across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, each serving freshly baked bread, pies, pastries and cakes – all made with recipes that haven’t changed in 30 years.

Urban Bakery

This funky little café has a garnered an enviable reputation for its delicious soups, salads and sandwiches. And, of course, its bread and home baking, which includes sourdough, delicious buttermilk cheese scones, homemade pies – including vegetarian and vegan options – opera cake and cream horns. They even sell bags of homemade pizza dough.

Artisan Baking Community

Artisan Baking Community is a social enterprise bakery designed to deliver training and opportunities across the areas of employability, social inclusion, health and sustainability in north east communities. They work collaboratively with many partners including universities, communities, businesses and individuals developing scale ale and sustainable food projects.

Northern Rye 

Northern Rye are a small micro-bakery based in Newcastle, specialising in handcrafted sourdough breads and viennoiserie. Favouring simplicity, their sourdough is made using only flour, water and salt before being proved for up to 28 hours, giving it a rich flavour, delicious aroma and heavenly crust. Available to pre-order for collection from their Byker-based bakery, take some home and allow yourself some indulgence this week, with a sourdough bacon butty or some simple jam on toast – proven to perfection.

Bluebird Bakery

The Bread Shed

The Bread Shed in Beverley produces loaves from scratch daily from Tuesday to Saturday in its powerful ovens. This isn’t your sliced white, though: they dabble with strong flavours including cheese and Marmite bread. Their stollen is a Christmas-time treat.

Bondgate Bakery 

Family recipes underpin Bondgate Bakery’s products, which are also stocked in Harvey Nichols. Winners of the 2015 BBC Food and Farming Awards for best small retailer, their Christmas cake flapjack – which Bondgate simply call ‘crunch’ – causes queues around the block.
