If you like: Top meats and a chilled vibe
Then try: Porterhouse Butcher and Grill, Newcastle
There’s a bit of a switcharoo coming to Fenwick Food Hall, with Ko Sai out and this new grillery in. It’ll take after Saltwater Fish Co’s angle of taking top produce and treating it with respect, but they’ll be using the charcoal-fired Josper grill to do meats supplied by, among others, Fortnum and Mason supplier Peter Hannan of Hannan Meats.
If you like: Boutique bottles
Then try: Nord Bottle Shop, Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay’s food revolution continues to, er, revolve apace with this incoming bottle shop plugging a hole in the town’s scene. It’s not really ready as such (they’ve finished sanding the floors and painting the walls, you’ll be glad to hear) they’re hoping to open up on Park Lane this summer. Follow @nordbottleshop for the latest.
If you like: Being on a roof terrace
Then try: East 59th, Leeds
We’re not sure what it is about rooftop bars which Leeds loves so much – The sweeping vistas of the cityscape? The slightly Miami Vice vibe? The gratification of an inherent nosiness? – but whatever it is, between The Belgrave, Redondo Beach, Issho and now East 59th, there are a fair few. This one, run by D&D who also do Crafthouse and Angelica at Trinity and near neighbour Issho, is at Victoria Gate and has a menu built on classic Americana plus a good cocktail selection.
If you like: Indie, veggie, healthy nibbles
Then try: Pom Kitchen, Sheffield
This new one on Sharrow Vale Road does great salad bowls and cakes, and its friendly, chilled-out vibe means its soared toward the top of our brunch hit-list. It’s top for vegan stuff too.
