Whether you’re a die-hard follower or just dabbling, vegetarianism and veganism are growing in popularity. Dining out shouldn’t make it harder to find veggie-friendly feasts, and this collection of restaurants proves just that

Filmore & Union
Branches regionwide

The ethos here is that a balanced lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle, and in reflection of this, they serve a variety of ‘clean living’ dishes that will delight even the most hardened, healthy-eating sceptic. They’ve made a real effort to make dining out a treat for those who are trying to stick to vegetarian or vegan lifestyles, and also cater for a range of dietary requirements too.

The Good Apple
18 Derwent Street, Sunderland SR1 3NU
0191 564 1763
www.goodapplecafe.co.uk

Start your day the vegan way at The Good Apple – their breakfasts are perfect for filling yourself up in the morning, without the calories. We love the look of The Hungry Vegan – two rounds of avocado on toast, two handmade veggie sausages, grilled mushrooms and garlic tomatoes, served with two hash browns and baked beans. You’d better bring your appetite!

The Jumping Bean
5 Neville Street, Durham DH1 4EY
07762 032223

At first glance, the menu here certainly doesn’t look veggie-friendly, let alone vegan. There’s a choice of burgers, hot dogs and milkshakes that, unless you knew better, would appear to be ideal for any carnivore. But this restaurant is wholly vegan, serving up plant-based options to please those in search of something substantial. They use the best quality meat substitutes here, and the result is that diners keep coming back for more.

Bojangles
7 Sea Road, Sunderland SR6 9BP
0191 447 5090

This health-focused café offers both vegetarian and vegan options, like chickpea and spinach masala, served on a bed of red and white quinoa. They also serve breakfasts too, with specials like vegan pancakes with a variety of delicious toppings. There are options for all here, so even if you can’t persuade your friends to ditch the meat, there’s still plenty of delicious choices for them to choose from.

Tea Sutra
2 Leazes Park Road, Newcastle NE1 4PF
www.teasutra.co.uk

A zen tea den, offering a variety of speciality teas alongside delicious vegan bakes – this is the perfect place to enjoy elevenses. The team at Tea Sutra aim to cater to your wellbeing, so there’s no coffee, no wifi and loose leaf tea only (tea bags are so not zen) – perfect for whiling away an afternoon and focusing on some self-care.

The Green Guerilla
Unit 11, Edward Street Industrial Estate, Darlington DL1 2UP
07872 389446

Catch these guys at Durham Market Place every weekend as they serve up ‘veggie food with attitude’. You can expect delicious favourites, like veggie shepherd’s pie, or satisfy your sweet tooth with tempting bakes and cakes. They’re also stocked in a variety of cafés throughout the region, so keep an eye out for them.

Echo 3
11 Clarks Yard, Darlington DL3 7QH
07717 525709

The coffee served here is roasted on site, but a good brew is nothing without a sweet treat to accompany it. Luckily, the bakes here are regularly veggie friendly, sourced nearby from local producers. Made using raw, plant-based ingredients, the treats on offer are often lower in calories and higher in essential vitamins and minerals, meaning you really can have your cake and eat it too.

Bean Social
53 North Road, Durham DH1 4SF
0191 384 3378

This place is a favourite with locals and visitors alike, serving up delicious veggie and vegan meals that keep the crowds coming back for more. Pop by for a stonebaked pizza with a variety of tempting toppings, or a vegetarian sausage roll that’s been delighting diners since their opening in 2017.
