WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NEWCASTLE’S NEWEST BURGER BAR

I must admit, when we were invited to head down to meat:stack to sample the menu pre-opening I was hesitant. The idea of dining out in these times made me feel nervous, but knowing how good the burgers are it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. When we arrived, I needn’t have been nervous, an orderly (and socially-distanced) queue had formed outside, which we joined eager in anticipation for our burgers.

The burgers at meat:stack are famous in the North East, they formerly held the residency in the kitchen at No28 and The Dog and Parrot, as well as serving from their own take-away joint in the Grainger Market. When things get busy, or one of us needs a pick-me-up, meat:stack are a popular choice for a Living North office lunch, so I could easily have told you how great the food is already. On this occasion though, my tastebuds had changed. I no longer eat meat, and I have to say, I was slightly worried I wasn’t going to love this spot, known for its beef burgers, as much as I once did.

Wrong. The jackfruit burger was my go-to, and actually very delicious (I went for normal cheese opposed to vegan). Despite trying to convince my dining partner to try one of their American-style cheeseburgers, she ordered the Korean chicken, and I’m told it was also delicious. The sides were equally as impressive as the main event – one generously loaded with truffle and parmesan shavings, and the other queso, lime and chilli.

We finished things up with a sample of the blueberry cheesecake shake. Not a flavour I would have chosen myself, especially when up against biscoff, but it’s one I would definitely order again. Topped with whipped cream it was the sweet hit we need after indulging in our salty burgers and fries.

It’s a fairly informal affair at their new spot on the Bigg Market – ordering takes place canteen-style, burgers are served on trays, and hands are most certainly required, and encouraged. If you’re looking for somewhere for a laid back date night, or catch up with friends, meat:stack has your back – with all of the socially-distanced and cleaning requirements in place to allow you to actually feel relaxed.

Opening Friday 10th July.
