Make your weekend one to remember, with a great breakfast in Hexham, Harry Potter in Middlesbrough, and Santa (yes, really) in Tynemouth

Friday night was made for post-work drinks, and there’s no better place for this than The Nuthatch in Middlesbrough. They spice up classic favourites – quite literally, try the chilli and mango mojito which uses ginger ale instead of soda water for a real kick. If you’re feeling festive, the cranberry sauce Collins is the ultimate Christmas cocktail.

How do you like your eggs in the morning? Preferably cooked by the Small World Café in Hexham on a slice of crisp buttery toast. Choose your bread – baked at the Rothbury Home Bakery – and have it topped with two local farm fresh eggs – fried, scrambled or poached. And one more thing: eggs are best accompanied by a cup of their house tea from The Northumberland Tea Company (with a splash of local milk).

Harry Potter: A History of Magic opened at Middlesbrough Central Library a month or so ago, but we reckon by now the initial crowds will have died down enough for you to explore original manuscripts, sketches and material from the archives of Bloomsbury, the book’s publisher, and JK Rowling herself with ease.

Santa is taking a short break away from the North Pole to come to Tynemouth. He’s at the Land of Green Ginger, scoping out who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. Tickets (which cost £7) are still available to the grotto, where children will be able to meet the big man himself, receive a Christmas goodie bag, and a wish list pack to take home. Because sibling rivalry isn’t a thing in Santa’s world, any brothers and sisters can get in for half price.

The Stand Spotlight Christmas Special will feature some of the best up and coming talent in comedy, and all proceeds will be donated to the Newcastle West End Foodbank. You can also bring along a bag of food to donate to the food bank, so the festive season is more bearable for those who need our help. It’s a great way to feel warm and fuzzy while having a laugh at the same time.
