A typical British seaside town with great fish and chips, a handful of independent shops and an abundance of Victorian charm

'Pick up weird, wonderful and utterly bizarre accessories from Northern Lights Interiors.'

Eat...
You can’t leave Saltburn without having sampled the fish and chips. There are lots of takeaways but our favourite, The Seaview, offers both in-house dining, which can be enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the sea and take away options if you want to eat yours on the beach. For a full English breakfast, smoked salmon bagels and pizza for lunch, or cocktails in the evening try Rapp’s Café. For steak and meat dishes, and an impressive à la carte menu, dine at King’s Grill, which showcases local artists’ work on its walls.

Sleep...
Rushpool Hall is a beautiful Victorian hotel once described as North Yorkshire’s most ‘picturesque country mansion’. The majority of rooms here are suites, giving you plenty of room to relax after exploring the immaculate grounds. If you want to cook for yourself, book a week at The Old Dairy, a cottage that sleeps six people just a short walk away from the sea at Grinkle Park. Facilities include a jacuzzi, barbecue and good-sized garden. Pets are allowed too.

The arts are in abundance here. As well as many independent art galleries such as Hawkins, which showcases sketches and paintings inspired by the local area, and Saltburn Studios with its 16 resident artists, there’s also Saltburn Arts Theatre – a Grade II listed Gothic-style building with performances most weeks. Pick up all kinds of homemade chocolate treats and traditional sweets from Chocolini’s, weird, wonderful and utterly bizarre accessories from Northern Lights Interiors and coastal-inspired home accessories from Brambles.

Don't Miss
Fancy yourself as the next Gordon Ramsey? Book yourself onto a course at Arches Cookery School just a few miles from the town. Use locally grown fruit, vegetables and meat reared on the doorstep to make fabulous dishes to impress your guests.

Enjoy tea and cake, take a walk, admire Italian-style gardens and see a miniature railway at Saltburn Valley Gardens.

Walk along and take great photos on Saltburn Pier – the most northerly surviving British iron pier – and take a ride on the iconic cliff lift.

Around the Corner
While you’re in the area pay a visit to the pretty village of Great Ayton. It has not one but two village greens, interesting walking routes, cosy restaurant Joplins and the recently refurbished King’s Head Inn, which is a mile outside the village at the foot of Roseberry Topping.

With an independent bookshop, a florist, butchers and the queen of correctly fitting underwear, Sadie the Bra Lady (the shop stocks lingerie, swimwear and accessories), the market town of Guisborough is worth visiting. It also has a ruined Augustinian priory.
