Discover a New Side of Raby Castle

Raby Castle
For the first time ever, Raby Castle will be open throughout October for exclusive tours of previously unseen rooms

This October, visitors to Raby Castle will be able to enjoy a whole new view of the 14th-century castle as it opens its doors and gardens during autumn for the first time. There will be exclusive tours led by the castle’s knowledgeable guides taking in rooms which have been previously inaccessible to the public. The Behind the Scenes Tour will offer you the unique chance to discover a different side to the 600-year-old castle, while learning about its rich history.

The Behind the Scenes Tour consists first of a condensed version of the castle’s usual tour, to give you an overview of the castle and family. Then, you’ll gain exclusive access to staff corridors and stairs to see an impressive suite of rooms which were built for royalty. These rooms have remained unchanged since their original conversion to bedrooms, and played host to figures such as Frederick, Prince of Wales during the 1700s.

You’ll then walk through the striking Hunter’s Gallery, which is decorated in the Strawberry Hill Gothic style, which was popularised by Horace Walpole in the 1700s. Finally, you will have the rare opportunity to view four unique bedrooms accessible through the gallery and previously unseen by the public.

Every behind-the-scenes guide is a veritable fountain of knowledge regarding the castle and will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the history and family, as well as provide you with fascinating facts about what life would have been like in the castle in the past. The tour will offer the chance to understand where the newly-opened rooms are situated in the context of the old working household. For example, it’s likely that the royal guests awoke to the smell of freshly baked bread, as the west wing is located above a 15-foot bread oven.

Don’t miss this limited opportunity for a captivating glimpse into the lives of the past, through their fine interiors, stunning art collection, and striking architecture spanning the Medieval, Victorian, Georgian and Regency periods.

Raby Castle’s decision to remain open into the autumn also provides you with a fantastic way to keep the kids entertained this October half-term. Join the Friendly Footman for a special interactive children’s tour and learn about what it was like to be a knight, how the castle was defended from attack, and participate in your very own knighting ceremony.

After your day of history and culture, be sure to pop into the castle’s newly-refurbished tearoom for deliciously autumnal treats, with toffee apples for the kids and a creamy pumpkin latte for you.

Tickets for the Behind the Scenes Tour cost £25 per person. Booking is essential.

The children’s tours will take place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday across half-term times, booking children’s places is essential and they must be accompanied by an adult with a full price ticket.
