At 33, founder Alex Elliott has quickly become recognised as one of the world’s leading Bloodstock agents, renowned for his buying of both young, untried horses and also horses with racecourse form.
Alex grew up around horses and has worked with renowned industry figures such as Sir Michael Stoute, Christophe Clement, Saeed Bin Suroor and Eoin Harty, during a career that has seen him journey from his birthplace in the North East of England to Ireland, Australia, Dubai, and the USA, before settling in Newmarket, Suffolk.
‘I was born and raised in Durham; my dad was a barrister in Newcastle and my mum is a partner in Latimer Hinks Solicitors in Darlington,’ says Alex. ‘Horses were an integral part of growing up, with point to pointing, hunting and pony club taking up most of my weekends. From an early age it was racing that caught my attention, and it quickly turned into an obsession.’
‘I’ve been lucky enough to work with, and for, some of the most successful owners, trainers and breeders in the game. Hard work, attention to detail and a focus on the end goal is what they all have in common. If you can deliver on each of these, I feel that you’ll develop an edge over your competition, and edge is what ultimately gives you success.’
Since establishing Elliott Bloodstock Services in 2014, Alex has consistently unearthed numerous top class horses for his clientele, with winners coming at some of the most famous race meetings around the globe. The 2019 flat turf season has got off to a superb start for Elliott, with four individual two-year-old winners already in the bag and a Royal Ascot winner in The Grand Visir, who was purchased at the 2018 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale.
‘Each success has its own story no matter what the level,’ says Alex. ‘Pleaseletmewin is a particular highlight. I purchased him for £36,000 as a yearling and he went on to win a Group 3 race as a two year old before being re-sold, later that year, for 450,000 GNS. I also must mention Supasundae who I purchased privately for his owners. He has won three Grade 1 races over hurdles and won at the Cheltenham Festival.’
Alex’s reputation and professionalism is renowned throughout the industry and through Elliott Bloodstock Services, he is looking to bring that expertise directly to new clients in the North East and Yorkshire. One such new client for the agency is eminent North East businessman Geoff Turnbull (MBE), owner of Elwick Stud. Geoff remarks: ‘Elliott Bloodstock are a pleasure to deal with and we truly value their advice and expertise, their track record is outstanding, and everything is done with the utmost honesty, transparency and class, I couldn’t recommend them highly enough.’
On the subject of attracting new owners in to racing Elliott is full of optimism and explains how the company can help. ‘Racehorse ownership can be seen as quite elitist, and daunting to some people initially, but that really doesn’t have to be the case,’ he reasons. ‘There are many different ways to get involved in the owning of racehorses, from sole ownership to syndicates and also pinhooking schemes aimed at providing a return on investment. We run a number of such schemes and those involved have enjoyed significant returns.’
‘We take pride in helping our clients enjoy their journey from the very start by making them feel fully involved in the decision-making and selection process. It’s a great lifestyle choice and it can be hugely exciting and rewarding. Our wealth of experience and contacts within the industry see us perfectly placed to provide sound advice and guidance.’
‘Operating out of Newmarket is a huge advantage both to me and my clients wherever they are based, as it is one of the main training and breeding centres in the UK. My assistant David Appleton is based in County Durham, which works well for us, as he provides a further point of contact and management for many of our clients and their bloodstock portfolios.’
Elliott is keen to explain the main motivation for his meticulous approach. ‘Owning a piece of a winning racehorse is one of the biggest thrills in life and nothing beats seeing our clients collecting their prize when a horse we have purchased together wins a race. Owners are the most important people in the industry and should be treated as such in every aspect. Helping them and their families achieve success, is the ultimate satisfaction.’
