There’s plenty going on at the wall in 2017, so whether you’re looking to release your inner archeologist or immerse yourself in Roman life, we’ve rounded up a selection of events to get involved in.
19th Century Mini Archaeologists
Let your children discover what it was like to be a Victorian archaeologist, learning 19th century techniques and all about the history of the wall in this educational and entertaining day out in half term at Chesters Roman Fort. There’s a family trail across the forts so you can join in the fun too.
Chollerford, Northumberland NE46 4EU
8 April–10 September
Learn all about the cavalry that used to guard the frontier of the mighty Roman Empire in this major exhibition spanning across the full 150 miles of wall. Explore the role of the army and what they’d do day to day, and see some real Roman armour up close. The wallwide exhibition will also include art displays and dramatic re-enactments so it promises to be exciting for the whole family.
Do your bit for charity by taking on a nine mile trek across the wall in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Last year the event raised over £50,000 and in 2017 you could help them raise even more – and keep your own heart healthy too.
Starts at Walltown Quarry, Brampton CA8 7HF
Watch one of the biggest Roman re-enactments in the UK as a troop (known then as a turma) of 30 cavalrymen perform training exercises as described by Hadrian himself back in the day. It’ll impress the kids and is a great way for them to learn some history.
Held at Bitts Park, Carlisle CA3 8UZ
