Made Cafe, Whitley Bay

The Made Cafe came into being when owner Jeannie, interested in the idea of a ‘one-stop shop’ with varying different crafts on offer, noticed a gap in the crafts-related market in the North East. Made Cafe was born, a business that specialises in high-quality creative craft workshops with fantastic guest tutors, many of who deliver workshops exclusively for the cafe’s customers.

The programme consists of over 50 workshops, and there are some great opportunities lined up for the rest of the year. Workshops for this Christmas are selling fast, and one highlight is The Christmas CrafTea Afternoon workshop, where the afternoon is spent making fragrant bath melts, body butters and vintage teacup candles among other activities, followed by a welcomed cup of tea.

In addition to the workshops, the gift shop stocks work from talented artists and crafters from around the UK, with many items unique one-off pieces. Cakes and scones in the cafe are homemade, and there is an extensive specialist tea menu which dovetails beautifully with the baked products – visitors may well be tempted to try a combination of lavender and white chocolate scones with the lavender and vanilla tea. An alcohol licence gives practitioners of the ‘early cocktail hour’ a chance to partake in afternoon tea with a little something on the side.

For keen sewers a Sewing School, set up earlier this year, offers customers the chance to learn how to sew or develop existing skills. With most sewing workshops selling out almost immediately there is now a waiting list, and big plans ahead for the Sewing School in 2016.

The business also hosts a wide range of private parties catering for all ages from baby showers to hen parties. Made Cafe also offers a ‘Design Your Own Party’ option for those people who are looking for something unique. On the first Wednesday of each month the venue hosts a ‘Look What I Made’ evening, a free crafts get-together – head along for a friendly chat about craft-related things followed by a cup of tea and a sweet treat at this cosy and fabulously unique place.
