6 of the Best Things to Do on the North East Coast

Bamburgh Castle
We do like to be beside the sea, don’t we? Here’s your summer bucket list sorted

Bamburgh Castle
Bamburgh www.bamburghcastle.com
WHAT IS IT? Bamburgh Castle is a striking sight – visible both from the beach and from the village below it. It has 14 public areas to explore, including an art gallery in the stables building during the summer months, and the engrossing Armstrong & Aviation Museum in the West Ward, where visitors can see aviation artefacts from the two World Wars.
WHAT’S NEW? Run for cover – the Vikings are coming! If you’re brave enough, head to Bamburgh Castle on 28 and 29 May to learn all about life in a tented Viking camp.
OUR HIGHLIGHT: Bamburgh Castle is rated as one of the top seven Anglo-Saxon archaeological sites in the world. We love watching real archaeologists at work here during the summer months.

Tynemouth Surf Company and Cullercoats Bike & Kayak
Tynemouth www.tynemouthsurf.co.uk
Cullercoats www.cullercoatsbikekayak.co.uk

If taking to the waves is your idea of a good time, Tynemouth Surf Company will help you find your sea legs. Alternatively, if you’re really more of a landlubber, rent a bike from Cullercoats Bike & Kayak and explore the coastline on two wheels.

Ocean Beach Pleasure Park
South Shields www.oceanbeach.co.uk
A classic seaside attraction, with rides, crazy golf, an arcade and a few more unexpected options like laser tag and Urban Wave, a simulator that will have you surfing, wake-boarding, body-boarding and snowboarding without the chilly temperatures or clinging wetsuits.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool
Hartlepool www.hartlepoolsmaritime experience.com
The fantastically named ‘mari-time machine’ transports visitors back two centuries to explore life aboard a naval frigate. Learn all about life at sea from guides in period costume and see Britain’s oldest warship: the HMS Trincomalee.

Beadnell Beach
A day at the seaside is one thing. A day at the seaside doing some kitesurfing or windsurfing is quite another – Beadnell Beach is renowned as one of the best-equipped spots in Northumberland for these watersports. There are groups who can help you get involved with either of them, such as KA Kitesurfing and Northumbrian Windsurfing, so decide what you fancy and get going.

Sailing North East
Hartlepool www.sailingnortheast.co.uk
Don’t just go on a boat trip, help run the boat trip! The professional crew of Sailing North East will guide you as you help to sail the Black Diamond. A range of experiences are on offer, with no prior knowledge necessary.
