The Northumberland Plate has always been the jewel in the crown of Gosforth Park’s calendar. The feature race, known locally and lovingly as The Pitman’s Derby, is one of the best handicaps in European racing. While the Music Showcase weekend always provides excellent entertainment at York Racecourse – this year set to feature Tears for Fears and James Arthur from 26th–27th July – if you want to see truly outstanding racing then don’t miss the Ebor Festival. Opening with the Juddmonte International, followed by the Darley Yorkshire Oaks and Ladies Day with fantastic prizes up for grabs on the Ebor Fashion Lawn – alongside what is regularly the highest-rated mare and fillies race in Europe – Coolmore Nunthorpe quickly follows on Friday, before the festival comes to its climax with the Sky Bet Ebor – York’s oldest and most famous race and (arguably) the best day in Yorkshire racing. Goodwood may be glorious, Ascot is regally splendid, but setting the pace is this spectacular meeting.
