The Late Shows 2019

Biscuit Factory
Everyone’s favourite free late-night culture crawl is back for 2019 – stay one step ahead of the crowds with our top five unmissable Late Shows events taking place across Newcastle and Gateshead this weekend

Stroll from venue to venue across Newcastle and Gateshead this weekend and see museums, galleries, studio collectives and landmark historical buildings throw open their doors to offer visitors special, one-off events – including hands-on workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, intimate performances and VIP parties. Here’s our pick of the bunch:

The Biscuit Factory, Ouseburn
Friday 17th May

Glitter-arty is where contemporary art and literature meets all things disco. As well as unveiling their Open Contemporary Young Artist Award, the Biscuit Factory will also host Forum Books for the event, who promise to bring with them a silent disco wth a literature-inspired playlist ad bookshop pop-up. Get your disco vibes on with free glitter face painting, enjoy themed cocktails and savour a twist on breakfast classics for a real all-day brunch experience served after hours on the gallery’s urban rooftop terrace.

The Cluny, Ouseburn
Friday 17th May

A must for all fans of The Favourite (though this is much more of a family affair). Watch this professional team of historical costumed interpreters and re-enactors as they bring Queen Anne and her court to life. There promises to be squabbles aplenty – but will it all end in a duel?

Tyne Bank Brewery
Friday 17th May

Nowt Special will be hosting its 10th event at Tyne Bank Brewery, exhibiting the work of 25 local artists whose work includes illustration, print, painting, sculpture and street art. Street performances, DJs, animated projections and live art feature alongside the main exhibition. Enjoy locally-brewed beer and street food, then take home limited edition artwork available only on the night.

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead
Saturday 18th May

At this rare late-night opening, discover an alternaitve landscape in Simon and Tom Bloor’s exhibiiton, The City Is Where We Are Going Next. Try to find your way out of a maze, build a tower, climb a structure, and reclaim the city as a space for fun. Discover stunning views of Newcastle and Gateshead, take a heritage tour of BALTIC and the Quayside, and enjoy a drink in the pop-up bar. There’ll also be special Kittiwake presentations, plus music from a Rock Choir.

Newcastle Castle
Saturday 18th May

The lower chambers of the Castle Keep will be transformed into a medieval tavern – complete with storytelling and light entertainment hailing straight from the Dark Ages. Make sure you keep your wits about you though, because you never know who you’ll bump into – with rogues, gamblers and ne’er-do-wells waiting at every turn.
