Happy Campers

Image of Glamping then in wood with campfire
Camping in the Cumbrian countryside doesn’t need to involve cramped tents and soggy walking boots. The area is jam-packed with glamping spots for you to snooze in style – here are a few of our favourites

Crake Trees Manor
Forget about WiFi and phone signal when you’re staying at this farm’s Shepherd’s Hut, where the only neighbours for miles around are dozy pheasants and swooping owls. Curl up by the wood burner at night and wake up to a breakfast basket filled with hot bacon rolls, pastries, yoghurt and fruit.

4 Winds Lakeland Tipis
You’ll find 21-feet tall painted tipis with room for six, each complete with a stove in the centre, a cool box for your Coronas and plenty of dream catchers for a sound night’s sleep. Located on the north western side of the longest lake in England, it’s an outdoor pursuiter’s dream, with windsurfing, canoeing, sailing and hiking on the doorstep.

Hut in the Sheep Wash
There’s only room for two in this remote riverside abode but you’re allowed to pitch a tent for family (unless you’d rather leave them with Grandma) and, unlike most campsites, you’re free to light fires and toast marshmallows all night long. With gas hobs, a grill and an outdoor barbecue, rustling up a feast on your camping trip will be a doddle – be sure to try the farm’s freshly-laid hen’s eggs.

Netherby Estate Yurt
Enjoy a welcome hamper filled with homemade treats at this charming secluded yurt. There’s plenty to explore on the surrounding estate and if you’ve got fishing equipment, bring it along to catch your dinner in the river. If you don’t fancy sleeping in the yurt, Netherby also offers an equally comfy wooden cabin.

Lakes Yurts
Camp in style and gaze at twinkling stars through a central skylight, while keeping cosy under goose down bedding. If you’re big on walking, Lakes Yurts are close to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Looking for something more relaxing? Derwentwater Lake is only four miles away and is the perfect paddling spot on a hot summer’s day.

Wanderlove Glamping
With Wanderlove Glamping’s heated toilet and shower block there’s no need to come home from your camping trip bedraggled. Eat on the decking, kick back on the comfy mattress afterwards (forget those yoga mats that don’t do your back any favours) and rise to the sound of sheep baaing and cows mooing – bliss.

Wallace Lane Farm
Glamping’s been taken to a whole new level on this farm, where the double-glazed Treehouse Cabin has Freeview TV and a hot tub out the back. Slide the doors open onto the patio and sip wine overlooking the valley, while posting photos on Instagram (there’s WiFi too). There’s space for well-behaved pets and other friends and family in the bunk beds, with the option to pitch a tent outside too.

Wasdale Yurts
Pick from two 18-feet wide yurts that have space for five guests or the 12-feet yurt for two. With raised decking, a wood burner and fully-fitted carpets you can rest easy knowing you’re relatively safe from creepy crawlies. There’s WiFi and electricity for those who don’t want to be completely cut off from the world, but we recommend switching off and enjoying the rural retreat.

Waterside House Campsite Tipis
If you’re looking to sleep on the shores of a lake, a tipi here is the one for you. After a long day of exploring the water, sit down for your evening meal on the wooden picnic bench and watch the swans glide past in twos.

Scales Plantation
There are five fabulous glamping huts on this working beef and sheep farm. We love the rustic feel to the Skiddaw Shepherd’s Hut, with pots and pans dangling from its wooden interior. The hosts provide local seasonal goods to your hut if you let them know what you’d like to cook before arrival, so you won’t need to worry about packing food.
