Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s most well known work, Sonnet 43, inspired the name of this microbrewery, (who recently rebranded to S43) based in her hometown of Coxhoe. Anarchy Brew Co
The Anarchy Brew Co set up base near Morpeth and officially launched in 2012, in 2018 they moved across to Walkergate and now have a Tap Room which has played host to many a tap takeover and brewer meet-up. They’re an award-winning small brewery, committed to big bold flavours, and are continually developing new beers and new methods, sometimes using unusual ingredients. You can order a minimum of six cans for home delivery, or collection. Looking for something boldly different? Try Hopped Up and Ready to Go for bold stone fruit flavours and hints of coconut with a bitter finish.
Allendale Brewery Company
They’ve been brewing here since 2006, producing a wide range of craft ales in a state-of-the-art, 20 barrel plant, run from a former lead smelt mill in the heart of the North Pennines. Their ales are available to purchase online in bottles and cans which reflect the mining heritage of the area. Try the Fat Hippo Proper, a tropical citrus fruit-inspired triple-hop IPA brewed in collaboration with Fat Hippo.
North Brewing Co
Another of the hip cans brigade, and another which has managed to build a huge following in a short space of time. Whilst the quirky brewery tap space at North Brewing Co remains closed, they are selling their beers online, for collection and home delivery. Make the most of the five litre mini kegs on offer here, which come in all varieties from Pale Ale to Mango Triple Fruited Gose.
Black Sheep Brewery
Black Sheep are one of the UK’s best-known brewers, and we love the fact that they’ve achieved this whilst championing their roots as an independent, family-fun business. Their range is ridiculous, you’ll find cask ales, small-batch larger, bottles and cans, as well as a range paying tribute to Monty Python. If you can’t decide on one (which is highly likely) create your own perfect 20-bottle crate.
Established in January 2014, Atom has caused a big bang as its fizzes around the brewing scene faster than a charged electron. The brewers behind Atom make it their mission to constantly experiment – one result of which is their Dark Matter, a chocolate stout with tonnes of oats and a touch of sea salt.
Kelham Island Brewery
The first beer brewed by Kelham Island was produced in the beer garden of the Fat Cat pub in Alma Street. It was a huge achievement which made Kelham Island Brewery the first new independent brewery in Sheffield in almost 100 years. Buy boxes of their brews, like the Easy Rider pale ale, or mini casks: perfect for when you want to bring the pub to your home.
