Our favourite destinations for a spot of al fresco lunch

Al fresco
As the days are getting warmer and the sun is peeking out from behind the clouds, this is the perfect time to try some of our favourite al fresco lunch spots in the North East and Yorkshire

Lord Crewe Arms
Chef Simon Hicks takes pub food up a notch at the Lord Crewe Arms by using the finest ingredients to give classic dishes a modern twist. When the sun is shining the pub’s walled garden is the most beautiful setting to enjoy a pint of local ale, views of the North Pennine moors and a delicious lunch with friends and family.

Sitting outside this brasserie on Yarm’s high street, with a cup of coffee in hand, evokes the Parisian café culture which inspires Muse. Look out for the café’s delicious ‘Plats du jour’, including duck shepherd’s pie and slow cooked lamb shank, or for a real treat try something from the seafood menu – our favourites include a bowl of classic moules marinière or the seafood pancake with thermidor sauce.

The quaint terrace at the award-winning Crab & Lobster is a real sun trap on warmer days, providing the perfect place to try the restaurant’s delicious food made from the finest local produce. Head outside and choose from the Crab & Lobster’s three-course set lunch menu which serves refined yet unpretentious dishes. As the name suggests, the fresh local seafood is the thing to try here.

The restaurant’s ever-changing seasonal menu is a real hit with both locals and visitors, offering a delicious range of dishes. The sandwiches, salads and sharing boards are perfect if you’re looking for a lighter lunch, whilst main courses including tasty seafood dishes and tender steaks are great for a special treat.

This beautiful country house hotel builds its menus around locally sourced produce and ingredients from the hotel’s own kitchen garden. With a beautiful backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales, the Brasserie’s terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a special lunch. Try the ‘Taste of the Dales’ platter to sample some of Yorkshire’s finest produce, or choose something from the grill – the chargrilled venison with truffle mash and blackberry jus is a real taste sensation.
