The Secret Garden

Dulux Design
With Christmas behind us, Elaine Cater, a designer at Dulux, explains what we can expect from Spring trends

'Springtime hints at new beginnings, with temperatures increasing and flowers beginning to bud. The Dulux 2014 trend of Secret Garden encapsulates this mysterious and romantic look to add a fragile quality to hardened urban spaces.

The Secret Garden colour palette is filled with soft, smoky tones of ripe plums, lilacs and dove greys set amongst varying shades of greens from dark spruce to pastel shades of fresh mint. A combination of these colours can create a tranquil and peaceful ambience, reflecting those of a magical and enchanted secret garden.

A great way to accessorise the look is with delicate laces, voiles and frosted glass to add a layered and enigmatic quality. Mercury mirrors and distressed fabrics hint at how nature can seem so short-lived and how we should relinquish in the beauty whilst we can.

Natural elements can be incorporated into the home. Try picking up an interesting fallen branch on your next country walk and coat with a diluted paint wash to bring the defined texture through. Once dried, hang above your bed to create an eye-catching and unique focal point. Attach photos, postcards and dried flowers to add a unique and personal piece of art.

With Spring just around the corner, the timing is perfect for creating your own Secret Garden.'
