MAKE MY WEEKEND… | Living North

As the big day draws ever closer, we’re bringing you plenty of festive fun – this week we’ve got a quintessential Christmas ballet and a cosy Christmas market, as well as comedy gold and rugby fever

Start your weekend with a festive performance of The Nutcracker at the Leeds Grand Theatre. Join Clara as she is swept away by her Nutcracker Prince in a true winter wonderland. Be enthralled by the dazzling dancing snowflakes, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the notorious Mouse King for the ultimate in festive entertainment.

Revel in the start of Christmas in the wonderful setting of the Bowes Museum grounds. Indulge in some Christmas shopping, with plenty to nibble on and sip along the way, at any one of the 80-odd stalls, which offer everything from leather goods and candles, to Belgian waffles and local gin. There’ll even be live music and traditional fairground rides to enjoy – what better way to spend your Saturday?

Head to Huddersfield’s best kept culinary secret for a decadent, treat-yourself meal. Their ‘Small Plate’ menu offers the best of British cooking, they suggest two to three small plates per person, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity to pick, choose, and share. We’d go for the cod-cheek scampi served with a shallot and soft herb tartare, squash, garlic and ricotta tortellini, followed by orange panacotta with dark chocolate chips.

This Sunday, head to Kingston Park for a mammoth clash between Newcastle Falcons and Edinburgh to decide who has the advantage in Pool 5 of the Champions Cup going into the final few rounds. Edinburgh won in the reverse fixture last time out, but with their injury problems abating, the Falcons will be counting on home support to continue their fine form in Europe.

For a heart warming Christmas event, Join comedian Jason Cook along with a bunch of his funny friends for an evening of music and comedy gold. In partnership with Metro Radio’s Cash for Kids, that charity that ensures no child is forgotten about this Christmas, this event is set to be the ‘happiest comedy show in the North East’ and, bonus!, it raises money for a great cause too.
