One can sometimes forget that Christmas is meant to be a stress-free time of year, but that can be difficult to remember when the high streets are full of folks going Christmas crackers trying to complete their seasonal shopping. Scarborough’s mission this year is to make sure that the town’s streets and stores are an environment of feel-good festive spirit – thanks to a cast of magicians, musicians, street performers, famous panto characters and, of course, Father Christmas himself bringing glee, glitter and glam as part of a new six-week festival, Counting Down to Christmas. There’ll be a giant Frozen themed ice sculpture, the chance to make create some Christmas cocktails, and, listen to carols galore.
Counting Down to Christmas will begin with a bang on the 14th November, starting with the Big Light Switch-On, where (soon to be announced) celebrity guests will wave their magic wands to light up the town which will be decorated with illuminated baubles casting rainbows of colour onto the street below, not to mention a golden, eight-metre high Christmas Tree, followed by an eye-catching laser-light show.
On the 16th November, Santa will sail into Scarborough harbour. But, if you don’t spot him then, he can be found in his Grotto at Boyes store, at Scarborough Sealife, and on the North Bay Railway thereafter – he’s understandably a very busy man this time of year.
There are a great variety of events in store as part of the festival, all of which will be happening late-night Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays to keep your spirits high during your shopping. This will include a Victorian Christmas market (where Queen Victoria herself will travel through time to make an appearance), Christmas storytelling, and a family fun treasure trail with some top prizes to be won.
When you’re not shopping at your favourite high street stores, or picking locally-produced artisan gifts from the independent traders, wrap up warm and stroll along the beach, admiring the spectacular shoreline lit up by Christmas lights, and enjoying the freshest fish and chips in cosy tea rooms, cafés and restaurants. Or, extend your time in Scarborough and stay overnight, where you can wake up to the famous Full Yorkshire breakfast. So, with Counting Down to Christmas being Yorkshire’s largest Christmas variety show this year, there are plenty reasons to head to Scarborough for all of your festive fancies – yule thank us later.
