Thrillers and rib ticklers will keep you entertained this week

There’s no doubt about it: Ruby Wax is a comedy legend. Having been in the funny business for more than 25 years now, she knows a thing or two about comedic timing. But in recent years, she has also become something of a poster girl for mental health – writing three bestselling books (to date). So it seems only fitting that in her latest stand up show Ruby blends the two: considering how, despite technology, our minds remain the key to finding the yellow brick road to happiness. All in her characteristically witty fashion, of course. See her for yourself at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium in Yarm on Wednesday. 

The Purple Carrot, Malton is putting Yorkshire’s vegan and vegetarian dining scene firmly on the map. Using fresh ingredients to craft ‘Instagrammable’ cakes, coffees and vitamin-rich lunches, The Purple Carrot is now also serving a new three-course ‘alternative’ Sunday lunch menu for £19.50 – try quinoa and courgette lasagne followed by a vegan pavlova, in which the egg whites are cleverly substituted with chickpea water.

Newcastle’s Theatre Royal welcomes Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, after its sellout run in London. When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. But will he ever discover who was responsible?
