If you want to get a true taste of seaside life, Whitby’s the place to be on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May. The ever-popular tourist town is set to welcome the Whitby Fish and Ships Festival for a second year running.
Last year’s inaugural event was enjoyed by thousands of visitors from across the UK, who flocked to Whitby to explore its unique coastal culture and sample its sensational seafood. This year looks to be no different, as visitors can browse a Food Village where celebrity chefs and local seafood producers will be sharing their fishy fare, enjoy family entertainment and live music – from toe-tapping sea shanties to soulful sailor songs – as well as admiring ships of all shapes and sizes on the harbour.
‘The festival has sparked such huge interest,’ says Janet Deacon, Tourism and Corporate Marketing Manager for Scarborough Borough Council and Area Director for Welcome To Yorkshire. ‘Whitby is one of the few places left in Britain where you can still experience a seafaring way of life, but this friendly and feel-good event does much more than celebrate the past.’
The festival, Janet explains, will showcase local seafood producers and their efforts to be more sustainable, while helping their distinctive harbour heritage to thrive for years to come. Seafood from the Yorkshire coast is continually in demand, supplying some of the finest fish restaurants in the UK and Europe, and the seafaring way of life has inspired some of Britain’s best boat-builders, chefs, artists and musicians. ‘We want visitors to fall in love with Whitby, so we can’t wait to share the town’s fishy secrets again this year,’ she beams.
UK seafood industry visionaries Seafish have once again given their backing to the Fish and Ships Festival, recognising the dedication and vision of those working so hard in the local fishing industry.
So if you’re up for a weekend buoyed by live entertainment and sensational seafood, look no further.
