We take a look at just some of the beautiful, private gardens in the North East and Yorkshire that you can visit this summer to help raise money for charity with the NGS

For a small fee you can pre-book tickets online to explore stunning and unique gardens you wouldn’t otherwise have access to. All funds raised will go to the charity’s Help Support Our Nurses campaign, which highlights the amazing work of nursing charities.

Ferndene House, Ryton
This three-quarter acre garden owned by Maureen Kesteven is surrounded by trees and a beautiful arrangement of plants. Throughout the summer, the garden is filled with a wide range of flowering perennials which bloom into amazing colours around a box bordered area, wildlife pond, gravel and bog gardens.

Visitors can prebook a time slot to visit this garden on Saturday 11th July between 12pm and 4pm.

The Beacon, Stocksfield
Patricia Hodgson has been opening her garden in Northumberland for the NGS for nine years, and visitors love to discover its plantlife in the summer. Based on a steep site, there’s plenty to discover on different levels. Water runs gently throughout with peaceful places to sit and reflect, surrounded by colourful combinations of roses and acers.

Prebook for Sunday 12th, 19th and 26th July or 2nd August to see what’s on offer this year.

Oliver Ford Garden, Consett
Bob & Bev Tridgett's peaceful, three-acre garden has been developed in conjunction with BBC Gardener of the Year as a space made perfect for quiet reflection. Explore the stream, wildlife pond and bog garden as well as the semi-shaded Japanese maple and rhododendron garden. More wildlife can also be spotted around the rock garden and insect nectar area, alongside the orchard and meadow.

Visitors can prebook a time slot to visit this garden on Sunday 12th July between 1pm and 5pm.

The Nursery, York
This former suburban commercial nursery is now an attractive, organic, private, garden with more than 100 fruit trees and many different vegetables grown both outside and in a 20 metre greenhouse. Tony Chalcraft and Jane Thurlow’s garden features a variety of plants providing habitats for wildlife, making it the perfect place to explore nature this summer.

Prebook for 19th, 20th and 21st July.

115 Millhouses Lane, Sheffield
Sue and Phil Stockdale's south-facing, cottage-style garden is decorated with unusual plants which add colour all year round. These include a collection of roses, peonies and clematis as well as exotic plants. There are plenty of seating areas throughout the garden and a wide range of plants for sale.

Visitors can prebook a time slot to visit this garden on Sunday 19th July between 1pm and 5pm.

Goldsborough Hall, Goldsborough
Previously opened for NGS from 1928–30, the garden has been beautifully modernised by its present owners, Mr and Mrs Oglesby. An impressive 12-acre garden and landscaped grounds surround the Grade II-listed house. Take a stroll on the Lime Tree Walk which was planted by royalty in the 1920s. The garden now boasts an orchard, a restored kitchen garden and a new glasshouse. Plenty of colour is added with the flower borders featuring the Yorkshire Princess rose, named after Princess Mary.

Prebook to visit this garden on Sunday 19th July between 10am and 4.30pm.

A variety of virtual garden visits are also available, for those unable to visit or those who would like to explore further afield, and donations can be made online. Book tickets at ngs.org.uk.
